Lifemask's bio
I live in the West Country and enjoy gardening, reading and the theatre. I guess I am fairly left wing, having worked as a social worker and seen the darker side of life. -

Should we rule out imported chlorinated chicken from the USA?The chicken are chlorinated because the conditions in which they live are bad and much lower than the conditions which are required in the EU. So it’s a matter of unfair competition for British farmers and welfare standards for the chicken. Chlorine itself is not dangerous.ViewDate:

Should a statue of Margaret Thatcher be erected in her home town? She was also a supporter of the EECViewDate:

Should a statue of Margaret Thatcher be erected in her home town?I think if a statue were erected it would not last long. She was responsible for privatising many public services like water, the postal service and electricity which should be run for the benefit of all and not for individual profit. She was also responsible for much of the housing crisis by selling off council housing and banning councils from replacing the housing. She started the privatisation of the health service and social care by introducing the concept of purchaser and provider. She did a huge amount of damage to the country.ViewDate:

Would you support a delay to the final EU departure?I think many people now realise that Brexit is much more complicated than we were told originally. Now that we know how many companies are moving abroad and how many leading Brexiteers are planning their futures away from Britain, it’s time to have a rational and realistic look at our options and put them before the country in a peoples’ vote.ViewDate:

Does the future look brighter?Surely this accolade should go to David Cameron who opened this whole can of worms and gambled the future of the country just to try to heal the divisions in the Conservative party!ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsI hope that we don’t leave the EU as I think it would be a disaster for the UK. It is interesting that many of the leading Brexiteers ( Rees-Mogg, Nigel Lawson, Nigel Farage, Dyson ) have made their own alternative arrangements! Our childrens’ freedom to live and study abroad will end and it will be a disaster for many organisations including agriculture, the N H S, care organisations and university research. I always thought of us as a welcoming and tolerant nation and hate the way that Brexit seems to have given permission to racists and right-wingers to express views which were previously beyond the pale. Brexit was all about trying to mend the split in the Conservative party and was fraudulently funded and operated. Let’s hope that there is a second referendum now that people realise the true facts!ViewDate:

Will you be stocking up on provisions for post-Brexit?Most agricultural workers are seasonal so are only here for the harvest. Of those who are here permanently, some are registering to stay but many are leaving because of the toxic atmosphere which has been created.ViewDate:

Does the future look brighter?Interesting that you feel that the country is in a terrible state but do not attach any blame to this Conservative government which has an agenda of cutting public services and have slashed spending on education, the health service, social services etc. They have drastically reduced the grant to local councils and have reduced standards by handing contracts for running services like the railways, prisons and road maintenance to private contractors leading to a stop in standards. Easier to blame immigrants who contribute more in taxes and use fewer public services than the native population, especially when the government decided not to implement the controls which they could have!ViewDate:

Does the future look brighter? It was Britain who insisted on passport control at the borders! You don’t have to show your passport when travelling between countries on the continent.ViewDate:

Will you be stocking up on provisions for post-Brexit?Trouble is we’ll still have fruit and vegetables rotting in the fields because there will be no-one to pick them as all the workers are leaving!ViewDate:

Will you be stocking up on provisions for post-Brexit?This country does not produce enough food to feed us all - talk to a farmer about the ‘hungry gap’ every Spring when we rely on imports from the continent.ViewDate:

Will you be stocking up on provisions for post-Brexit?I won’t be stocking up as I (possibly stupidly!) am relying on the British people to realise that the obvious and best solution is to stay in the E U. We should be equal partners in Europe not little Englanders pretending that we still have an empire! -
