Cycling on pavements and in parksHaving recently early retired at 59, I have taken up liesure cycling to gain some exercise. I cycle on the roads, paths and local pathways for cyclists and pedestrians. The main people I come across are dog walkers of a similar age. Although I have a bell that I use, I find most cant hear it, I always slow and approach with an "excuse me" or two and proceed slowly. I use footpaths instead of roads where I feel the road conditions are unsafe, again using the same tactics towards pedestrians. I think it really boils down to a little mutual respect by all and using common sense. I've had varying reactions, one of my first encounters was with a similarly age couple of walkers, that I approached from behind. After first using my bell I got no response, I called out "excuse me" and the gent turned around in such surprise I thought he was going to have a heart attack. I passed with an apology. I think I just caught him by surprise but he did give me a little wave. Other reactions have been as though I had no right to invade their pathway, which is clearly marked for cycles as well.ViewDate:

UK Census 2021I'm surprised by the comments I'm seeing on Facebook regarding the census. How people aren't going to fill it in and believing it's going to be used for marketing. I imagine they'd be the ones complaining in future years about inadequate school places and other services. This time the census can be completed online, which should suit the vast majority of the population, those that don't do the internet have a clearly stated option to complete a paper version. I think the ability to complete online earlier than the 21st is to and try and prevent the system from crashing on the day, something they would be highly criticised for with no doubt hindsight suggestions of why didn't they let people complete over a wider time frame. The census has been taken since 1801 every 10 years, illiteracy has meant many could not complete it themselves but with assistance from others the job was done. I'm sure we can get it done this time.ViewDate:

Starting a SIPPI took redundancy in September 2020 and have applied to Fidelity UK to transfer my pension into drawdown. Although they are very friendly and helpful over the phone, actually getting the job done they are pretty useless. I've made endless calls and sent emails for them to complete a simple one page form and they are unable or unwilling to do so. I would give them a wide berth when contemplating who to go with.ViewDate:

Made redundant at the age of 50I've been furloughed (occupational health department have sheilded me since the lockdown started) and due to restart next week. The company have just announced redundancies. Given that I'm one of the eldest in my workshop, 58 years old, and given I'm not in the best of health which has not affected my attendance record. I feel I have no option but to take the voluntary redundancy option, jump before being pushed. I think it's going to be difficult finding another job at my age and in the current climate. I'm not sure if my pensions will be enough to live on. I'm thinking a part time job would help but again in the current climate I think that would be difficult to find. Just not sure what to do.ViewDate:

Has anyone had a Reveal (implantable heart monitor) fitted. It's not one that you carry. It's implanted in your chest, it's only about an inch and a half long. It downloads the data to a bedside unit each night and that sends it to the hospital for analysis. Pretty much fit and forget.ViewDate:

Ruptured Appendix, emergency operation, recoveryI had my appendix removed at the age of 50. They attempted keyhole but once they discovered the state I was in, they had to open me up with an extended cut to deal with it. Before I went down I was thinking that once I'd come around, had tea and toast, that I'd be off home. I was in hospital quite I'll for 10 days. It was several weeks before I could get about normally and was kept off work for 10 weeks. I would imagine with just keyhole recovery should be much quicker. Hope you feel better soon and just take things easy.ViewDate:

Has anyone had a Reveal (implantable heart monitor) fitted.Well just incase somebody is going to get one fitted, this is how I've got on after just over 2 weeks. I followed Dr's orders and took the rest of the week off work. In all honesty I felt fine apart from a little soreness at the insertion site. I returned to work the following week and could carry on as normal. Running your fingers over the chest and you can feel where the monitor is, although you can't notice it by looking. The device downloads to the base unit at midnight each night, it has to be in range though of about 2 metres. You do not notice anything happening when it does this. Apparently they will contact you if they see anything amiss that you haven't noticed yourself. So far I havent had another episode, but having one would help greatly in getting an answer to my problem. For those that are interested there loads of videos on YouTube, just search for Medtronic linq heart monitor.ViewDate:

UkuleleHow odd, I was in Chester yesterday and saw guitars and Ukulele for sale. It got me wondering if Ukuleles were difficult to learn. I'm completely useless with instruments but always admire people who can play any instrument. I've always wished I could play something and with retirement approaching, I just wish.ViewDate:

How much income do you think you need for a modest or comfortable retirement? As someone who is hoping to retire in the next 3 years (I'll be 60) this is an interesting topic. I suppose it really all depends on individual circumstances and lifestyle. Patcaf has put down some suggestions that seem to fit well with my own ideas. Hope you can work something out.
