Do you wear a reusable face mask or a disposable one?My husband and I normally use reusable masks with a disposable filter. If I have literally popped to the little corner shop and only worn it for a couple of minutes, then I will store it in a plastic box and reuse it. If I have worn it for a major shop, or any other reason where I wear it for a couple of hours, I put it in the wash, washing it in the machine. I have 2 masks so I have another to use when one is in the wash, and 2 boxes so clean mask, clean box. The filter obviously goes in the bin when the mask goes in the wash. I also keep a couple of disposable masks in my handbag in case I, or my husband, forget. Masks are not a magic protection against Covid, but will help to protect others if I were to have it without realising. Even if they don’t stop every germ, they do cut down the viral load. However, keeping distance and washing hands are still just as vital as they ever wereViewDate:

Would you welcome a 'circuit-breaker'?Winter is only just starting and levels of infection are already rising alarmingly. What events to date seem to have shown is that there is a sizeable minority who not only will not take things seriously, but will also do anything they can to cock a snook at the authorities for imposing restrictions, witness the scenes in Liverpool last night and the raves during lockdown. Therefore, as certain individuals cannot be trusted to act responsibly, for the good of everyone, I believe another total lockdown to get the numbers down is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, no way will hospitals be able to cope, far less get on top of other treatments that had to take a back seat during the first wave. I hope, though, that the Government will learn from the last time that they were far too naive in hoping people would all abide by their recommendations. I hope, therefore, that the current three-tier system will be in place for as long as is necessary - years even - after the next lockdown is eased, so that any area that still poses an issue can very speedily (which is the key) have further restrictions imposed. I understand the Chancellor’s fear of the economy collapsing because of lockdown, but a full-blown second wave would also decimate it and the uncertainty of when the next lockdown will happen will cause shares to plummet anyway. People worried about eating out, going round shops unless absolutely necessary etc, will also seriously damage businesses, maybe permanently, maybe more than a total lockdown because they will feel they have to be open in case of customers who will not come in numbers sufficient to cover the businesses’ costsViewDate:

Are we on a countdown to chaos? At the start of the outbreak in the Uk, as now, the Government was hopeful the common sense of the people would obviate the need for the more draconian measures of lockdown. Alas, such hopes were misplaced and naive. One thing about common sense these days is that it is far from common! Nothing has really changed from those early days, in spite of the months in lockdown, at considerable cost financially to the country, and emotionally to individuals. Thus, unless certain individuals stop acting as though it is all over, and start acting more responsibly, we will be back to square one. Unless the police are allowed to police proactively to get these idiots out of general circulation (enforced 14 day quarantine for all found indulging in risky behaviour such as the parties of the last couple of days maybe?) it seems pretty inevitableViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months? As always, they lump all the over 70s together, as if they were a homogeneous group. At this stage, I think most relatively fit people at the lower end of this age group would probably not fully comply with this, unless they were in a high incidence area. My husband is 73 and probably still has a far better immune system than me, although I am 10 years younger, judging by the number of colds etc that I get compared to him. We currently do not use internet shopping, as we prefer to see what we are getting, but are internet savvy enough to do so if we had to. Many elderly people might not be able to do this. How will they get their food etc? Even things like getting a haircut would become problematic or impossible. Also, social contact is very important for health and well-being. Months without human contact would be terrible for those on their own.ViewDate:

Is Labour's new WASPI promise credible? They will promise the stars to get into power, yet are mostly dead set on remaining in, and strengthening further, the UK’s commitment to the EU. The problem is most of their promises cannot be achieved without vastly increasing the National debt and the EU has strict limits on the amount of national borrowing any Member Country is permitted to have, thus making their ambitions in regard to one incompatible with the otherViewDate:

Is it ever OK to date a work colleague?Relationships will develop between work colleagues. It is, after all, where you spend most of your time. Where I used to work, it was stipulated that staff could not have line management responsibility for someone they were in a relationship with. Better than trying to keep it a secretViewDate:

Should over 70s be banned from voting on the country's future? There are people who seem determined to sow inter generational divisions. We have seen it in terms of accusations that we got our houses far cheaper, in spite of the far lower wages and crippling interest rates we endured to pay for them; pensions rates and other benefits we paid in for etc. There many (thankfully not all) younger people who are arrogant enough to believe they know far more than the older generation and gullible enough to swallow what they are told. They would do well to realise that it is the generation that is now 63 and older who voted us in back in the mid 1970s. These people are also the ones who remember life before we joined and that we were still able to go to Europe - even to live there - we had robust race relations legislation for the time and many of our Health and Safety laws were more stringent, in many cases, than European ones. Further, by their arguments, surely a very high number of MPs, including Mr Corbyn, would be forced into retirementViewDate:

Would you like a general election?A general election is the only way out of this ridiculous Groundhog Day that our current crop of MPs have trapped themselves in. They are all spending so much time and energy in trying to score points off their opponents (and not just those in other parties) that an end to the current damaging uncertainty, or what their constituents they were voted in to represent want, seem to be an irrelevance to them. The cynic in me believes the main reason the Labour Party has refused to back an election up until now is that they are terrified they would lose handsomely.ViewDate:

Do you think the tactics of Extinction Rebellion are justified?Celebrities who happily admit they are hypocrites; demonstrators who have been spotted on numerous occasions using single use coffee cups and takeaway food containers; hysterical screaming for the Government, or whoever, to DO something; demonstrating against organisations like the BBC, who have done so much to publicise green issues over the last couple of years... I believe they have now alienated many people, which will only harm their cause. As far as their right to demonstrate goes, they have exercised this ad nauseam recently. The law has to balance those rights with the rights of ordinary people to go about their lawful business and daily lives. They have had their fun. Move them onViewDate:

Is the 'Naughty' label not nice?Anyone who has actually had children knows they are not just mini-adults and you cannot treat them as such. Small children cannot fully grasp the effects their actions have on others and also tend to think in the concrete rather than the abstract and to live very much in the present. The idea of actively choosing how to behave, rather than just reacting, is not really a concept a small child will grasp. Yes, making sure you say the behaviour was naughty, rather than the child as a whole, but couching things in an intellectual framework that the child is developmentally unable to conceive is unhelpful to say the least
