Washing machines: a brief historyMy mum got her first washing machine in 1959 - it was a Hoover with a spinner at the back and a mangle that folded down into the machine when not in use. My job was turning the mangle. When first first married I washed everything by hand in the kitchen sink until I had a stay in hospital in 1970 and hubby did the washing! He promptly declared I need a washing machine and bought a second hand Service Super Twin. It lasted for 15 years until it finally gave up the ghost and I got a Zanussi automatic, which also lasted for many years. How did we manage :)ViewDate:

Do you agree with the TV licence changes for over-75s?Haha. Yes indeed. As you say, three good meals a day, someone to check on you on a regular basis, free medical care on demand - no matter how outrageous. Gynasium, library, TV, free heating, no cleaning, cooking, washing, ironing, hot bath/shower - with assistance if required, company and family can come and visit - Hmmm!!!!!ViewDate:

Do you agree with the TV licence changes for over-75s?Absolutely correct. I know people, one lady in particular, who has played the system all her life, never paid a penny in tax, NHI, etc. Only ever worked cash-in-hand whilst claiming benefits. (And yes, she was reported - more than once- but nothing ever happened) She now has a state pension, pension credits, disbility and everything else she can possible claim. Her income now is actually greater than couples who have worked and paid into the sytem all of their lives but can't claim pension credits. She lives alone in a 3-bed council property and the council come and cut her front and back lawns and trim the hedges regularly. Judging people's ability to pay for anything based on claiming pension credits is a complete and utter joke
