Speakers Corner CommentsI have noticed through some of my volunteering work that things are becoming increasingly difficult for the aged. I'm pretty sure that we fall into to or possibly three categories. The two I initially thought of were, worked all your life, saving for your retirement, only to find it's not really going to help that much, as the savings aren't earning much interest with risking losing it, and your home may go to pay for the Residential Home you may have to go in, and the index-linked pension always seems to fall short of the rate of inflation. Then there are those who rely on the government to make ends meet, for whatever reason, both of these have helped pay for the handouts that have been made to others even worse off, when working. Then there is the third group, well off enough so that they don't have to worry about these sort of concerns. Another aspect that is causing me some concern, are the areas that should be governed by a government body, because the subject matter is clouded in mystery to most of us, but which is so difficult to decipher, that we have to spend our dwindling saving hiring a solicitor. Things like factoring, or who deal with the problems caused by builders on new sites. There is also an increasing number of us plagued by a variety of problems, caused by Utility Companies, just to name one, who make things so difficult for you to contact them or to understand some of the jargon they use to confuse. All of this is unacceptable, as it makes retirement miserable, instead of enjoyable, and those in charge do not seem to care. Rant over, but I'm sure a lot of you feel the same.ViewDate:

Are you able to get a face-to-face doctor appointment?Whereas, I understand how this has come about, it seems like Covid has put all other illnesses on hold. I am not sure I understand why Doctors surgeries can't operate more normally, all they have to do is vet the patients as they come through the door, which is being done currently, but then allow access to Doctors for those ailments that can be dealt with by them or forwarded to the Hospitals for a more through decision, none of which is being done. It's the stupid wee things that we suffer with, in my case with old age. I've had to put up with my hearing difficulties because I can't get my hearing aids sorted, something I was in the process of sorting before Covid came along. Those problems in old age which, worry you, because you don't understand what is happening, or how serious it can become, in such a short time. I don't want to be a burden, but, I do get seriously scared that my not getting to see a doctor will drastically affect my mobility.ViewDate:

Are you worried that other people are not following Covid rules?Firstly, I don't want to control my emotional response, I am absolutely raging that there are people out there not following Covid rules, and I just can't understand why not. Surely they understand that they are putting other lives at risk, and if they don't then the laws should be stringent enough to make them realise the impact of their decision. They should feel the full weight of the law if they cause another person's death through their decision, and this should through being charged with a minimum of man slaughter, the same should apply to all those that can be attributed to contributing to the death by association. Then maybe these folk will finally understand that responsible for their actionsViewDate:

Would you be happy with a driving curfew over the age of 70?The number of drivers who are 70+ that go out and drive when they clearly are no longer able is ridiculous. I would rather see some form of driving test instigated for those 70, or over to assess their abilities at least every 5 years. I am fed up to the back teeth, with all those supposed drivers, driving excessively slow, or causing problems to other drivers, because they are no longer capable, but refuse to acknowledge it. I myself am 70, and I have already told my wife that if she, or I, think I am no longer safe to drive I will give it up, rather that, than being responsible for another's death.ViewDate:

Should shops continue to take cash? It's simple it's legal tender so no one should be refusing it. Those that do, should be very careful because they may well find themselves without a business.ViewDate:

Should Covid vaccination be mandatory for care home workers? No offense to those who work in care homes, but really this is a no-brainer. If your folks were in a care home I'm sure you would want every measure to be taken to ensure their safety, I would even prefer everyone to be vaccinated, or stay away from me. It is entirely reasonable to me that those running care homes should require that their workforce be vaccinated, and a failure to do so should result in their being fired, after all this is the safety of those who live in care homes we are talking about.ViewDate:

Do you keep your car in your garage or is it full of junk?I use the extra space the garage afforded to store my boiler, garden equipment, and Nieces bits and pieces. I do not feel it's necessary to garage my car, instead, I leave it on the drive, where it is more accessible.
