MrsH.'s bio
I am a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Sister-in-Law, Friend, etc., etc. (Female), and mostly I'm Me. I live in the Midlands with my Husband and our Adult Son. I've been married since 1976, the very, very dry & hot summer, and on our wedding day, it rained for the first time in the morning, so everything in the photos looked green and alive, rather than the barren look we'd had all summer. We paid just over £8,000 for our first house, a semi-detached 3 bedroomed property, moving after our two children were born to a larger 4 bedroomed detached property, costing £20,000. Strange costs, but True facts. I am 5ft. 4" tall, and won't reveal my weight!! I enjoy Music, Films, Fun & Laughter. I do not work now, since becoming ill, following an accident at work. (won't go into that one!!). My sense of humour is what I think most of my friends would think I have lots of. I do try to see a positive where a negative could be, doesn't always work, though! -

Is the UK Government doing enough to lessen the spread of Covid-19?I believe that I am responsible for my own health in as far as possible so I will use my own initiative over this and try to avoid all places where there’s likely to be crowds. I will continue to wash my hands in the correct way as I’d been taught when nursing. Using my initiative will mean any signs of possible risk will see me disappear! Having a severe Lung condition has often meant I miss out on going to places where there’s high risk for me to catch infections and I’ve had to leave places when crowds have appeared. For me this is normal life and so far has kept me alive. Thinking along those lines will continue and hopefully I will avoid Covid 19, altogether!ViewDate:

Should we rule out imported chlorinated chicken from the USA?Unless you Only buy from a known Butcher and never buy ready prepared takeaway type meals. I only eat what I know is made here, reared or grown here, and lived a good life prior to correct slaughtering practices. As a butchers daughter I know what I like and exactly what I want. I was taught by a man at the top of his trade until his untimely passing through illness completely unassociated with his business. Is there anything I left out!??! Haha! What it basically means is knowledge is key. I own one!ViewDate:

Should we rule out imported chlorinated chicken from the USA?The treatment of these creatures prior to culling is disgusting, and those who inflict that level of cruelty should be ashamed of their actions. For no other reason than this, we should refuse all chicken and chicken products, until these poor creatures are kept in a better environment and fed appropriately to their proper diet. Bulking agents making them grow too fast, and too fat, is a horrendous way of treating them. In 21st century civilised society this should not be happening - Ever.ViewDate:

Are newspaper stories to blame for destroying lives?IT IS TOTALLY WRONG FOR ANYONE TO INTRUDE ON ANOTHER PERSON'S 'SPACE', AND THAT INVASION HAS TO CHANGE FOR PEOPLE TO FEEL THEY CAN BREATH FREELY AND IT IS NOT BEING MEASURED BY SOMEONE WHO IS SO CLOSE THEY CAN DO THAT EVEN WITHOUT VOLUME CHANGES. I AM OFTEN SICKENED BY THE COMMENTS OR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY THE PRESS, OR MEDIA COVERAGE OF TRAGIC OR PERSONAL, HAPPY OR IMPORTANT PRIVATE LIVES. HOW INCREDIBLY IGNORANT DO THESE PEOPLE HAVE TO BE, BEFORE THEY WAKE UP AND SEE THE TORMENT THEY TREAT THEIR VICTIMS WITH?!!! I AM CERTAIN THAT IF THOSE TABLES WERE TURNED AROUND, MOST OF THOSE PEOPLE EMPLOYED TO BE AS INTRUSIVE AS POSSIBLE, WOULD BE LIVING ON A KNIFE-EDGE THEMSELVES AND WOULD SOON FEEL INCREDIBLY CRUSHED AND STOPPED FROM BREATHING NATURALLY.ViewDate:

What is your main health concern as you get older? If you are seriously worried about this, you can arrange to have Power of Attorney prior to you having reason to need someone for this. All of your own personal wishes can be arranged including DNR if wanted. In the same way, as pre-arranging a funeral, the Power of Attorney must carry out your wishes, not their own. This can be a person you trust, and it can be anyone who you wish to become that Legal Representative in the event of you being incapacitated. I hope this will help you and put your mind at ease about some aspects of your future care. It won't improve your chances of becoming ill but might go some way towards reducing the stress involvedViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?I am amazed that Addiction is considered not to be a health problem in the 21st century. Addiction is most definitely an illness, and though many people manage to cope with life, without requiring a crutch, there are also many people who do require it. Addiction is not something that happens overnight, and it is not chosen. Addiction does not affect everyone, for some there is an internal 'switch' that pings off when they've had enough, but for other's that switch cannot be turned off. Science has proved this as a fact. In my career, I met with people who had IQ's well above the Normal range, yet they had required help for Addiction. Intelligence would normally show a substance of whatever kind should not be taken, yet they do it. On the other hand, I met with people who had lost everything, through no fault of their own, like a car crash that kills a whole family, leaving no-one behind except for this one person. They endure pain beyond belief, but don't feel it necessary to have some sedation to help them sleep. Their level of resistance is entirely different, not stronger or more sensible, just different. The person who goes to the Pub each night, because their home is empty of company, has a greater chance of becoming addicted to alcohol, but it does not happen to all of them. We cannot generalise about a person who is right or wrong, or what they begin with will shorten their life-span, because there are people who live to be very old indeed, who have smoked all of their adult lives, while another person dies prematurely, for having made the same choice. Compassion is something we all need at some point in our lives as human beings. Better to give it, too. As who knows when we may need it for ourselves. Kindness doesn't cost anything, neither does love and support. If we all offered it to someone, there might never be a need for some people to need the crutch they find themselves taking and relying on. Just holding the hand of someone in emotional or physical pain can make It easier to bare. Like-wise, it could help us too, one day.ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?Hi, As someone who does have years of experience in the Healthcare Sector, I can confirm there is Never a One Size Fits All. Person Centred Care is what it is all about, and as such, each Person is an Individual who is treated as such. The idea of this is quite obvious, because of each Person being Different from the next. The NHS does accept Everyone for Who they are, and not which box they fit into. I had the misfortune of needing emergency care in the early part of this year. There was Never a point where I was put into a box, to be treated the same as the Person in the next bed, or even across the ward. I was treated as Me. The NHS is a huge Back-Bone to health & well-being, and each of the Staff who appears in front of you will never consider you the same as the next person they see. I can vouch for the fact, by explaining how I had very similar 'symptoms' to the person next to me, but at every point we were treated completely differently. The same age, the same colour, the same back-grounds, the same amount of children and grandchildren. It would appear we'd come out of the same box, but we hadn't. I have numerous health issues, and so did the person to who I am referring in the next bed. However, that is where the differences lay - We did Not have the same health issues, just similar symptoms on the day of admission to hospital. That Person was treated with one set of treatments, and I was treated with another. I left hospital still requiring lots of care at home, while I said Good-bye to my new friend who would be staying in for longer than I had to. It makes sense in the long term, for everyone to be managed in a different way, so the speed of recovery if possible, is met in the fastest way. We ARE all different.ViewDate:

Will you be sending Christmas cards this year?As a member of the Older Generation, I will 'of course' be sending cards in the Post. But, I will reduce the number I would normally send, by putting family members cards into one envelope, instead of sending each one a card to their separate addresses. (nieces & nephews will get their cards included in their Parents card envelope). I have friends who live a good distance from me, but they live close to other friends, so I will do the same by asking one to pop the others through their letter boxes. I've been doing this myself for a while now, and its no big deal for me to go locally and deliver some, from distant family & friends who also know people close-by to me. This year, I'll be saving money myself. It has got beyond expensive now, so why not save money where I can. I don't like using other methods of sending good wishes at this time of year, it is however, important that each person knows I have taken some effort to connect with them.ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?Again, I agree with "jeanmark". And, we who are fortunate have a responsibility toward those less fortunate. Encouraging a better healthstyle choice is our responsibility thus enabling those less fortunate to make their own good health choices& take responsibility for themselves. Without the tools they cannot, just as we the more fortunate would be less able, if we did not have the tools. Celtwitch, no man is an island - we all need other people in our lives as human beings. That way, if something breaks , we help each other to heal.ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?I agree with "jeanmark". These health-related problems are illnesses, too. And, if you charge people to get health-care Only for certain 'conditions', then where does that line of thinking Stop. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong in people's lives, for their conditions to become their crutch. Why would anyone pick on the more vulnerable in society, as even the person who has Chosen this type of lifestyle, has done so for a reason. I believe more psychologists would be useful, in assisting people with habits or addictions, to overcome their inner problems, and then to help them quit these dangerous addictions. To charge someone for wanting/needing help at their most ill points would be cruel. It could quite easily slide to involve people with hormonal problems, or attitude behaviours, or ADHD, or going further down the line, could include people with mental-illness. None of us would wish to "contract" some of these horrendous illnesses, and for someone with an eating disorder, an addictive personality disorder, a behaviour disorder or the like, would be the downfall of a compassionate system where asking for help is met with care and dignity, appropriate support and generous appreciation of The Person.ViewDate:

Are you taking part in Dry January?I don't drink anyway, so have no need to make changes this January, or any other month. But, this is a great idea, to help people recognise how much they usually have, and would also become aware of the habit side of it, not just the effects of those glasses that previously hadn't been counted. I wish everyone who is trying this, the very best of luck, and hope it isn't as painful as the imagine.ViewDate:

Do you take a daily dose of vitamins and minerals?I only take the Vitamins prescribed for me, and don't take anything over the counter, in view of any interactions that might occur with my other meds. My Consultant issued me with the prescribed vitamins, according to the results of blood tests. I'd find it hard to know which ones to take, or not take, so prefer to go on the professional advice. For most people it isn't a problem to use the OTC medications and vitamins, which is very good and so much easier than the problems I have.ViewDate:

Should Prince Charles step aside and allow Prince William to become the next King?I believe Charles should be King, and William would soon follow anyway. Charles has valuable input with many matters connected with the UK, and has good sense when it comes to decisions about the Country. William still has many life experiences to try first, and then he will be ready for this position.ViewDate:

What is your main health concern as you get older? As I already have many of the health problems mentioned in the List, I can only say that I'd prefer not to deteriorate any more, although I know already, that is too much to ask. I worked with people (when I used to work), who had brain injury, diseases, or illnesses, so my greatest fear is of losing my mind. Being unable to function, protect my own dignity, feed myself, and generally take care of myself, is my biggest fear. Being out of control with speech & behaviours, it terrifies me to think that could be me. So, I shall remain wary of any changes in this area, and try to maintain my health conditions, as they are.ViewDate:

How has your life been affected by arthritis?I've just come across this topic, and can fully identify with anyone experiencing the pain of this. I have Lupus (SLE) as an Extra to being riddled with Osteoarthritis. Mine began at the top of the spine, worked downwards slowly and gradually gaining strength, it took over my life. Stopped me working, made it impossible to run or rush. Changing my life and my personality completely. I roar like a lion sometimes when a simple task is beyond me. If I drop something it can be several hours until I can physically pick it up. Drives me around the bend, which brings me to saying, it prevents me from driving, too! Say something positive about getting it, mmm,.... I know..... It has enabled me to see the world from the view of a disabled person & I get a blue badge for parking!!!ViewDate:

Peripheral Neuropathy - what is it?Hi geoff340, Peripheral nerves are those which are outside of the Central nervous system, and Neuropathy is numbness, loss of feeling or some nerve damage causing the nerves to die. This means you have a loss of sensation/feeling in the outer nervous system. Usually it happens with diabetics if they don't stick to the Rules, as it is when the blood stops going to their hands or mostly, their legs & feet. It can result in gangrene when this happens & is not treated promptly. If you have Peripheral Neuropathy it is likely the blood is not reaching your extremities because of nerve damage/loss of sensation. I might not have explained this quite so well as a doctor, but I hope you get the gist of it!ViewDate:

MEMORIESI remember Dad trying to tune-in the tv, and having to move around the room to get a picture to appear, while twisting & turning an aerial in his hand. One evening he got fed up, stood on the sofa & held the aerial up towards the picture-rail, pointing it at the wood. Mum straightaway shouted Yes, we've got a picture, you'll have to stay there all night, tonight, with a twinkle in her eye! Those were days of simple pleasures & family humour.ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyHi Angel48, I read your post with sadness. I too know how it is, to watch someone you love, waste their life by abusing themselves with drink. My Son who's in his 30's does this & has for some years. Its a cruel addiction, as are all addictive products/habits. Your Husband is the only person who can decide for himself. I used to work caring for people who had been addicts in their younger days and it had made them into vegetables as a result, by furring the brain & nervous system. I often wished it were possible to show the scenes I witnessed everyday, to the public, just to make them aware! But, like you, I can only stand by and watch. I don't think threats of leaving will make anyone change their addictions, the power is too strong to give up, or they wouldn't have become dependant on it, in the first place. Praising & encouraging are much more effective tools to use than criticism or threats. It is sad you haven't got a friend to share your troubles with whenever it becomes too much for you. But, maybe it would help your husband to know how much you care & want his friendship back, so the time you have together can be made special & memorable. It will depend on the type of man he is & I can only wish you well, in your struggles. I hope he will see the light soon, just as I wish my Son will and everyone who is battling their own demons, will. Taking care of yourself is important too, so your GP could be helpful to you. I hope all works out for you.ViewDate:

I do assume the other driver accepts full responsibility for the event!! I say how surprised I am purely from the point of view that you are bound to seek legal advice, whether or not it was included in your insurance, and everything you are owed would be fought for! The No Win No Fee Solicitors do exactly what they claim to do, so pick up that phone and help yourself, please. Its Only what is due to you, and you are worth it. They will do any fighting necessary to secure the best for you, otherwise they don't get paid. GOOD LUCKViewDate:

How Seconds Matter to Someone with ArthritisI developed arthritis in my spine first. I just couldn't get my head around how long it took me to do things having been so organised prior to it. Known for being early for everything, and always ahead of myself, I was now late for everything, and so unbelievably slow at everything. I began to think it was the beginning of the end for me. I saw every niggle as some sign of it being my last day on earth. A bit bizarre, I realise this now. It came as such an enormous shock to be disabled, and not in control of my time. How angry I used to be, turning up late for things. Now, people have got used to it,and I am slowly getting to grips with it, and making light of it (sometimes). Have had this condition now for ten years. The advertisement is so accurate with wearing the weighted boots, and being held back always. -
