What does ageing gracefully mean to you?Ageing happily is my goal. As my name on here suggests, I'm helping set up a cohousing group where we intend to encourage each other to keep active and healthy, enjoy our food (and drink!) and generally have a lot of fun together, whilst leaving as small a footprint on the planet as we reasonably can. Don't think graceful comes into it anywhere!ViewDate:

Small acts of self care that can make a big differenceWe're planning to promote 'active ageing' in our cohousing community, encouraging each other to keep fit, active and involved well into old age. The more personal elements of self-care seem a natural extension to this intention, so thanks for highlighting itViewDate:

Could a group of us buy and share a large property together?Coming to this conversation a bit late, but have you considered cohousing? You can find out about it by Googling the UK Cohousing Network. In cohousing, everyone has their own home, often smaller than before, and there are communal grounds and other common facilities that are completely run by the people who live there. It's fairly new in the UK but quite common in some other countries such as Denmark and the USA. As you can tell by my username, that's what I'm doing for my retirement! I'm helping set up a cohousing project in Colchester, Essex, which we're financing from the sale of our existing properties, just as you suggest. We'll decide together what needs doing and we'll therefore set our own service charges. But above all, we plan to have fun together! For me, it's the start of something new, not retiring from life at all!ViewDate:

RetirementWell, I don't know about wealthy, but you probably do need to be a property owner as you usually have to buy a home in a cohousing community. But there are cohousing groups being set up all over the country so, like all housing, prices differ according to locality, and most have a range of different properties at different prices, so its worth searching around. Of course in cohousing, you're not just buying a home - you're also buying a share of the common grounds and common house, so prices will reflect that. I think a few groups do have some homes to rent too.ViewDate:

RetirementHi Superman! My solution was to join a project that uses your skills and offers a new future too. I've recently retired and have joined a cohousing group. We're working hard to make our plans to build a new eco-housing community a reality. We'll each have our own home but with some shared facilities too. Cohousing is a great way to live in retirement. I'm so glad I found out about it - I'd never heard of it until I heard about it on the radio. Our cohousing project is in Colchester, Essex, but there are lots of others setting up around the country. Lots more info on the UK Cohousing Network website for anyone who's interested.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsI sympathise, houndie. I'm having to move area to get the lifestyle I want. I don't know where you are, but if you want to see if anyone's trying to set one up near you, most groups are on the UK Cohousing Network website http://cohousing.org.uk/ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsI'd love you to do something on cohousing. Did you see on the news the inspiring story of the ladies in Barnet moving into their new homes together just before Christmas? You can look them up on the Internet- they used to be called OWCH, but are now called New Ground. Cohousing is such a great way to live in later life, so it's a shame not enough people know about it. Everyone has their own, independent home just like anywhere else, but you all share a community house where you can socialise as much or as little as you like, and it's all owned and run by the community members themselves. There are lots of other groups setting up around the country, some aimed at the 'silver' generation and others multi-generational, all open to both men and women (except OWCH, which is just for women). My group is called Cannock Mill Cohousing. We're building 23 houses and flats in Colchester, all built to Passive House standards, which means we'll have negligible heating bills. I don't live anywhere near Colchester at the moment, so It'll be a completely new start for me when we move in next year - very exciting at my time of life!ViewDate:
