English GrammarIs it not time that we stopped segregating our childern at an early age by sending them to catholic, hindu, muslim, or jewish only schools.. By doing that we are saying our particular religion is best and are not reflecting the multicultural society our children belong to and need to adapt to in life,ViewDate:

Should Londoners choose if they want to use Uber?I listened to a professor of entrepreneurs discuss Uber's decision to change their chief executive for a woman with a very good cv in business. It's all part of their game. Uber have had clashes with the London Council a few times. . What the professor explained was that Uber get a foothold in a city without paying too much attention to safety and licencing terms and conditions. They then begin to improve and develop their practice to appease the council and legitimise themselves By the time they get to that they are well established. This is how they operate. It's good that the public have choice but how many smaller Private Hire companies have they consumed? It is likely they will get their licence back but I hope the London Council put a ceiling on the number of cabs Uber have .and monitor their business practice.ViewDate:

Does the Sandwich Generation need more support? It's difficult juggling it all. I was a single parent with a school age child. I worked and supported both my parents who had health issues. It was a labour of love and I never regretted a minute of it. But I have to say their are a lot of young people out their who want it all and could settle for less, look after their own kids and free up their parent's time to care for an elderly grandparent.ViewDate:

Should Londoners choose if they want to use Uber?Sorry, if I misunderstood you linj, but you seemed to be saying that because there had been no issues raised in Birmingham, you didn't understand why London should have concerns. I watched a representative from Uber on morning television and he refused to take responsibility for policing the people that they give the work to. He said that was the Council's job. So they ignored a very serious complaint from the public against a driver. (That isn't the only issue London has with them) Uber just want the profits. It's a multi million pound industry. When you consider the number of hours their drivers work, the unsociable hours they work and what they have left after running costs. They will be lucky to earn the minimum hourly rate. Uber are undercutting the Black Hacks and other Private Hire but it's the taxi drivers' whose labour is being exploited. It;s not healthy for any one company to have a monopoly and Uber are out of control in London. This issue is close to my heart as I was a taxi operator and driver in Glasgow prior to retirement.ViewDate:

Should Londoners choose if they want to use Uber?Birmingham don't have the same volume of Uber Drivers. Glasgow renews their licence on an annual basis and monitor them closely. I believe David Cameron's in-laws have a hand in Uber so possibly that is why they got a foothold in London. If you had watched the concerns highlighted in the Tonight programme a few years ago. You may not be so complacent.ViewDate:

Should Londoners choose if they want to use Uber?I think the paying public need to be educated, they don't pay enough attention to the pricing structure or where their money ends up. when dealing with Uber and other Private hire companies. When you pay for your taxi , the money goes directly to a bank abroad. This allows Uber to pay much less in UK income tax. A few years ago the 'Tonight' programme highlighted that Uber was paying the equivalent amount in tax as 4 Black hack taxi drivers. Their response to Trevor McDonald on this subect was the govt get more money in tax from their drivers. This is shocking. They can also raise their tariff according to the demand for their taxis at any particular time. Your safety is not top of their list. You can conduct a police check on drivers applying for a badge but it is only as good as the day it is written. The police notify the council if a driver is convicted of a crime, Uber have totally disregarded a complaint of a sexual nature from a customer. Would you want your daughter using their service? They have clearly been flaunting other rules of the trade. It will all come out when their appeal is heard. We need honest people with integrity running the taxi trade. I'd rather pay a couple of pounds more for my taxi than donate to UberViewDate:

Streaming TV/On Demand TVI'm paying on average £80 per month to virgin media for TV basic package, home telephone and calls and 50Mpbs broadband.. I also pay for a TV licence. As a pensioner what would be the best way to go to cut this bill in half. should I get an outside aerial and freeview box and look for a phone and broadband package only. I generally only view BBC and STV channels and the big bang theoryViewDate:

Financial arrangement within marriage - what's your preference?Pam, That seems to be working very well for you and your husband. But I do envy people who have a relationship of complete trust, that allows both parties to have a joint account, spend what they need without having to ask the other's permission and they don't steal from or deceive each other. That way of working may be a thing of the past, too big a risk for people to take nowadays.ViewDate:

Financial arrangement within marriage - what's your preference?I worked alongside 3 women who earned substantially more than their husbands and all had their own bank accounts I always felt that they were the boss in the home. It can cause an imbalance in power. These days I think it's harder for people to trust someone with all their wealth. But it you can find someone who is worthy of your trust and all the money is in the pot then you have an equal partnership that makes for a happier life.ViewDate:

Financial arrangement within marriage - what's your preference? My father was the main earner while my mother worked part time and looked after the children. But family dynamics are different now. Both parents generally work full time and the children are cared for by grandparents. But it's likely one partner will earn less than the other. maybe people now are more about self interest. If resources are pooled I think it's a measure of your commitment to one another and one is no more financially secure than the other.ViewDate:

FuneralsSurely, there is a market for smart looking body bags for burial and cremation. But no doubt the undertakers would capitalise on these if they were available. Your only other option is donate your body to medical science. It's nice to pay your respects at funerals where you know the deceased and they have touched your life but there are those people who turn up at funerals with the expectation of a nice buffet and a free drink. With todays prices we need to kick that into touch. It should be the immediate family only going for a nice meal after the funeral. That's what I would wish for and to go quietly in a body bag.ViewDate:

SyriaYou begin to lose faith in humanity when you see people and children suffering in this way. But I think when you are dealing with governments with different cultures and mind sets, like Russia and Syria, you will never be able to appeal to their better nature, they don't have one.ViewDate:

KnighthoodsI'm sure there are a lot of people out there more deserving of knighthoods. They're handing them out like sweeties. Musicians like Rod have made their millions from the entertainment business, they don't give much back and continue to do it beyond retirement. Is this because they need the money or the applause? InheritanceAlthough I would not wish to end my days in residential care, I realise that if you become frail and need 24 hrs care it's unlikely that any of our children would be willing to give up their jobs to look after us. ( I wouldn't want that either) , so you need to make provision for your care if you get to a point you are unable to care for yourself. 24hr care is a costly business, there is no cheap option. Residential care involves staff working shifts, (12 hr shifts day and night), unsociable hours. The wage bill alone is extensive. Also health and safety aspect involves medication, the environment, fire safety, staff training. There has to be a number of care staff on shift to meet the Health and Safety requirements. If someone calls in sick then external agency staff need to be engaged. Residents with advanced dementia need a higher ratio of staff to care for them than in the main stream unit. Also there are domestic and kitchen staff, electricity, heating and food costs. Written evidence needs to be available for the care inspectorate. This involves staff qualifications, registration with the social services council, care plans to ensure service users receive good quality care. The private sector are profit making organisations. Local authority are not in it for profit but they are working within budget constraints. 24hr care in your own home would also be costly and you would have the running costs of your home as well. Having worked with recruitment of care staff It's been noticeable over the last few years that less people are interested in the care profession, your heart has got to be in it.ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?I think over the last 10 to 15 years people are becoming better educated on how smoking, drinking, drugs, over eating affects your health and that is having some impact. If you consider the number of your friends and family who are non-smokers in comparison to the eighties and nineties there have been changes. Doctors can refuse to give a patient treatment if they are not conforming to advice to support their treatment. e.g. if someone who is a heavy smoker refuses to stop, a doctor may refuse to carry out an amputation which would be a complete waste of time if the patient continues to block their arteries with smoking: there would be no point placing an alcoholic on the list for a liver transplant if they continue to consume alcohol. I don't think there is anything to be achieved by refusing free treatment to people with addictions, as most of them are already suffering financially due to their addiction. If we concentrate more on the treatment of the mental health of those with addictions, dependencies, then hopefully we will have less demand on the health service in years to come.ViewDate:

BrexitIt seems France and Holland are now also talking about a referendum. I think that a lot of people who voted didn't have a clear vision of how it will be if we stay in or go out and I'm sure a lot didn't vote at all because of this. At the end of the day could you trust the politicians on either side. The EU leaders are unhappy and if they don't make an example of the UK with the exit deal, then they stand to loose their well paid jobs if the EU disintegrates. It's a pity they didn't recognise sooner that they needed to review how the EU was running and make the necessary changes to ensure countries were proud to be a member. It's worrying who will be at the helm of UK Government. Even if there was another general election,I don't see any great leaders emerging from any partyViewDate:

Should we abandon marriage?I don't think marriage is unnatural if you are with the right person. I think life was simpler when families survived in council houses, no car, no savings, no computers, no smart phone, living from one week to the next. All the money went into the one pot. That was the norm for most and divorce rate was minimal. Sticking together through thick and thin was what marriage was about. But it's a new world and finding the right person that you can trust with your life and your money may be getting more difficult. People are becoming more full of self interest. But I think most people would want to have that special someone who will be there for them till death do you part. That may not fit for everyone. But if it became the norm to have no marriage, and people to have 3 or 4 relationships over their lifetime, would we then have children with the same mother but different fathers and less divorce but more court battles over custody or maintenance payments.ViewDate:

Is it ever acceptable for a man to be unfaithful to his wife?I always wondered why people are not honest and leave a relationship if they are unhappy rather than have all the lies and betrayals. Then it happened to me and I realised that my partner wasn't willing to move on until he was sure he had secured his new nest. He was not taking the chance of being left on his own. What really surprises me is that the women or men involved in affairs can ever trust each otherViewDate:

Isis - what are your views? We can talk about it until we are blue in the face but ISIS is trying to create a climate where the muslim community will be at war with the West. So albeit theirs if a distorted view of the muslim faith they will continue to recruit young muslim people who feel disadvantaged and share the dream of muslims taking over the world. It's fine to say atrocities like these bring us closer together but as it continues people will be living in fear and will be careful of where they travel and be suspicious of their neighbours. The cities are the hub of the community and it's the major cities they try to shut down. The recent events in Brussels shows that our intelligence is not perfect. In the past these terrorists have travelled to the UK and were not detected. I think the time has come to wipe their base out in Syria and target their leaders. They are reported to be planning to move into Libya. We need to be ahead of that. When ISIS is discredited and shown to be failing only then will terrorism in the name of the muslim faith come to an end. On the back of that we need to ensure that our young people are not feeling so disadvantaged that they are vulnerable to fascisits. The recent atrocities in Istanbul did not get the same media coverage as Brussels. Why was that?ViewDate:

Hello from AberdeenshireHi George, I've just joined recently, there's not many people from Scotland here. I'm from Glasgow. Would be glad of any DIY. cookery and travel tips. I'm currently in the process of replacing a tap washer for the first time with a little help from You Tube. It's good to be able to do these little jobs yourself. There are not many tradesmen around now who want to come out for small jobs. I quite enjoy DIY although my tool box leaves a lot to be desired. AnneViewDate:
