working in our 60sThis may be useful to some people who are unemployed and are thinking of starting a business., I have been unemployed for 5 years and only a few interviews in all that time. I have tickets for both days of the Business Startup show. A glossy brochure arrives in the post listing the guest speakers and free courses to attend on the day. Free Business startup show tickets at Olympia 16/17 November 2017 here are the links. http://www.thebusinessshow.co.uk/ http://www.bstartup.com/ Good luck and see you there.ViewDate:

Just joined so I'm introducing myself.Hello Silver Surfers. I joined last year but not used to the site yet. I am 59 and unemployed for over 4 years .My husband works long hours. I left school with no qualifications due to the death of a parent but this was never an issue in the past. My CV has huge gaps in it due to unemployment and child care and I am unable to obtain any references.. I have applied for for numerous jobs but agencies will not take me on their books. I simply cannot find work and have over 6 years until retirement. I spend hours alone in the house with no one to see or talk to.. Most of my friends are either working or retired but busy with commitments such as looking after grand children or plain "busy" (some are rude and criticise me whenever I phone them and never phone me) Hopefully I will find work and get out more when I get free travel at 60. I would love to find silver surfers in the same position to keep in touch with.ViewDate:

Pension ladies born in the 1950sHello Silver Surfers. This is my first post on SS ever. I too am in this position. I am 59 and unemployed for over 4 years since being made redundant . I am not entitled to claim any benefits as my husband is working. I try I simply cannot find work. I left school with no qualifications due to the death of a parent but when I was younger this was never an issue and I always found work. My CV has huge gaps in it and I am unable to get references. Agencies will not take me on their books I spend hours alone in the house with no one to see or talk to.. Most of my friends are still working or retired, looking after grand children, busy (or rude and criticise me when i get in touch) I will be entitled to free fares at 60 so hopefully I will get out more. I would love to hear from people in the same position as me. For those who want to see the breakdown of my interviews they are below. Kind regards , Mauritius I have had only 3 interviews One for a well known supermarket where I was left alone for 20 minutes. Job Spec was for specific days and hours. The position now included evenings and weekends. I did not get the job. At another I was asked to do a Power point presentation to a room full of people! I looked a complete idiot when I explained that I cannot do power point. Needless to say I was shown out and did not get the job For another I travelled for 2 hours on public transport only to find out that the start time was now 7 am (Impossible by public transport ).ViewDate:

Just joined so I'm introducing myself.Hi all, I joined in January and haven't got the hang of the site yet. I am aged 59 and married to my husband for almost 30 years. I live in Middlesex near West London and do not drive. My friends have either moved away or are busy with work or child care so I spend a lot of time alone and get incredibly lonely. I have been unemployed for some time and have had some degrading interviews. I would be happy with a part-time job. No one wants to employ a 59 year old. And I definitely have empty nest syndrome. I would love to make some new loyal friends.ViewDate:

New to SilversurfersHi Silver Surfers. I am 59, live in Middlesex (West London) have been unemployed for 3.5 years, since being made redundant. I have had a few interviews and been duped by agencies in to travelling miles to go to their agency as they have an interview for me to go to, only to be told that the position has gone etc etc I never hear back and am fobbed off when I phone or email .(I do not drive and sometimes the return journey takes 2-4 hours) I have applied for hundreds of jobs and rarely get a reply. Indeed I cannot not apply for some positions the I used to get at the drop of a hat as they insist on "Being a vehicle owner," or "A degree" Or "references from up a huge number of employers" and many more insistences. Luckily I have a loyal husband but I spend huge amounts of time on my own with no interaction or conversation. Most of my friends either working or retired and caring for grand children and have no time to talk on the phone. I would be grateful for any suggestions. -
