Frida's bio
Hi
I am 54 and have decided it's time to go on a world trip. I want to mix it up and do a variety of things such as volunteering, attending language school , adventure, culture.
I would like to challenge myself and want to travel solo for some part of the trip but am keen to also spend time with like minded people.
My ideal travel companion is someone with a focus on self development. Someone who does not think conventionally and is open to the new and growth.

Walking round the British IslesHi I shall take a look at the book- thanks. Realistically, I probably will not start my travels until the end of the year but have been planning for sometime. Although enjoyable, trying to work out the best way around the world and the most cost effective can get quite frustrating. I am in the process of changing many other areas of my life, some of which need to happen before I can start my exploration. Good luck with your planning! FridaViewDate:

Walking round the British IslesHi Rebecca I got very excited when I read your post. This is a long standing dream of mine . I had thought about travelling by camper van but I think staying in YHA accommodation is probably a really good way of travelling around the coastline. YHA has upgraded most of the accommodation and you can book in to a private room . I am not quite ready to make this journey yet , as I have other places to see but this is definitely something I would like to do in a few years. I would like to do it all in one long trip . I wish you good luck with your trip , it sounds fantastic! We certainly have a beautiful Island.ViewDate:

Travel companionsWelcome Paul- Can I add you to the list of interested people in meeting up to find travel buddies? There is three of us so far . It does take a little longer on this site to get responses but once we have above five, I think we can probably start thinking about organizing a meet up- What I gather from tapping in to the site a little recently, there are a number of people who are interested in cruises, so I am sure you will find someone.ViewDate:

He was 'just a cat.'Hi That is a beautiful story, made more poignant for me by the fact I lost my furry friend of 20 years a few days ago. A few years ago I went to visit my Spanish friend in southern Spain and I came upon a feral cat in the local park who I named Bonito . He came to meet me every day , in the same place until the day of my leaving. Your story tells me you observed this little chaps habits and identified with him in some way. It also sounds like you respected him. I am really touched by the effort you have made.ViewDate:

Immigration - what are your views?Hi All In my view, people come here because as a people we are compassionate, democratic and have services that provide care . I think we still need to offer refuge to those in need but equally we need to tackle the corrupt governments and lack of democracy in other countries. Even those in the EU fall short . We give a great deal of money in aid to African countries but the money does not go to those in need because the government and other services are corrupt. Our government is always saying we benefit economically from immigrants who do the jobs that we do not want to do but if we paid a reasonable wage for these jobs, unemployed natives of this country would do them. Not everyone wants a career. The lack of British doctors, nurses and many other professionals is the result of our education system . British children and some of their parents wear their lack of education , like a badge of honour. We really need to inspire our children to achieve and to fill the gaps . We need to bring back long apprenticeships where people can get to go to college and also train with experienced workers. We need to encourage people in this country to start businesses, run shops and be creative. We need to decide really what is our culture and ensure this is not eroded. It is not people coming to this country that erode our culture it is ourselves! When I speak to my London friends of all ages, they have no idea about our historical traditions, folk music etc. If we truly are a multi cultural society we need to ensure we first know our own traditions (which is not just football ,drinking and fish and chips!). as in France or Italy. Other countries have very definitive cultures, we do too, but perhaps we just do not care enough about who we have been and who we are now, as a country. We have a rich culture but we seem to lean on our default of meaningless "stuff" to describe ourselves which I do not relate to at all. I have worked with clients who have been in this country for 15 years and still can not speak the language. These are not people who want to assimilate into our culture . I really care and want to help others who are suffering but I would like us to stop trading with countries which are corrupt or have poor human rights . I definitely do not want to fund corrupt often rich countries. Equally, if someone comes to our country and breaks the law in any way , they should be sent back to their country of origin.ViewDate:

Should Britain stay in the EU or is now the time to leave?Hi All For me, coming out of the Euro hopefully will bring a renewed pride in our own culture . I would like us to focus on building our own industries. Local produce, textiles- yes, even steel. We are too reliant on Europe for goods. I really do like being part of Europe but we , more than any country give away so much of our culture. I love other cultures but equally , I love mine. I work in London and when I talk to others from Europe who live here and attempt to discuss my culture, they know nothing about it. These people have been here for years. It is not their fault , we just do not seem to care about our own traditions. When an event is organised, we have music laid on by other cultures, the food is often from another culture. We have traditional music in this country , we have great food (despite what others say about us!)We just do not celebrate it The problem is we don't even know how to define our own culture. I want us to buy British, support small business, focus on training and education to fill our own employment gaps. We need to produce more highly skilled people such as doctors , nurses. We need to fund more science and foster home grown talent. Leaving does not mean a lack of co-operation or trade. We are a small island but without industry and ways to self sustain in difficult times we will not survive. Europe has turned us into a financial and service industry. We are so reliant on other countries!ViewDate:

TAKING CHILDREN ON HOLIDAY IN TERM TIMEHi I don't think the main issue is around schools imposing restrictions. It is holiday companies who hike the cost up during school holidays . Parents are unable to afford it in the holidays and still find it cheaper to pay the fine and take them out of school. It is exactly the same thing when you buy for instance, a toaster, in one colour it is more expensive because it is popular rather than it costs more to produce. I actually think there should be the introduction of some form of legislation . Capitalism gone mad!!!ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi I have just joined silver surfers. I have decided to make 2016 a life changing year. I am assessing my life, re- training and want to start travelling. I have travelled very little but want to spend the next couple of years visiting and doing things that have sat on my bucket list for sometime! I am keen to challenge myself by undertaking solo travel but I guess, would like to work up to that by taking a few trips with others. I am open to suggestions on locations. I probably will not be available for travel until the end of the year. Liza -
