A Place For Random ThoughtsI just wanted to have a bit of a rant about news reporting. Today Bruce Forsyth died and this world shattering event was top of the news, before the awful terrorist attacks in Spain. Really? This was considered more important than other world events. Dear oh dear who makes these ridiculous decisions. I'm sure there will be quite a few people who will be sad that he has passed (i'm not one of his fans) but surely even they would agree that this isn't more important than terrorism,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,or are we becoming numb to this now it's happening more often. I really hope not,ViewDate:

Do you drink a cup of coffee every day?I have two cups of strong coffee first thing in the morning, then switch to de-caff for the rest of the morning and after lunch it's always tea. I'm wondering whether de-caff is as beneficial as caffeinated? Are we believing this anyway, they'll be changing their minds in a flash so I think i'm going to stop worrying about it :)ViewDate:

Is smartphone dependence a problem or just the way of the future?Yes we grew up in an age when we had to walk to the phone box Roof Top Crow and it wasn't a pleasant experience, but there is no need to rely on smart phones for contact with others, it is just as easy to skype or use a lap top within the home and we don't need to be attached to technology even when out and about our daily business where many older folks only interaction with people happens. The majority of younger people seem to be the ones who are reliant on smart phones, you see them walking down the road, on public transport, even in a group of friends where you would think they would be socializing they are glued to their phones. Also, yes, technology is keeping us alive longer and I would be interested to know how many of those who are alive are pleased about it. There are not enough facilities to care for the many thousands of dementia sufferers, frail elderly, unhappy and lonely OAPs and then of course there are those who thanks to dialysis spend their (unhappy) lives travelling back and forwards to hospital several times a week. No quality of life, and yes, I have spoken to several of them who wish they weren't on that treadmill. Banking is safer? I suggest you tell that to all those who have been hacked. Sorry I disagree, technology is not the be all and end all for a better life, in many ways it has made life worse for humanity. We are no longer social animals, just users counting friends, likes and dislikes etc on social media when we might otherwise be actually engaged in conversation face to face.ViewDate:

Friendship between the sexesI had a friendship with a lad of 18 (does that count as a man?) when I was in my 30s which started when he was a friend of my daughter and we found we had similar interests. We studied and laughed a lot and it was definitely platonic, so yes it can happen.ViewDate:

MOVING HOME ALONE ......AND TO A NEW PART OF THE COUNTRYYes i'm in exactly the same position jasmine. I keep trawling through internet housing sites, finding something in my price range and then I come over all scared because I don;t know where I should be going in the first place because of the childrens' situations. So here I sit scratching my head wondering what on earth to do for the best. Please let us know what you decide and how you get on.ViewDate:

Avoiding diabetes or just healthy eating?Well done Rosemary what a great result and all without medication. The medical profession are slowly catching up with the news that it's possible to reverse diabetes, my brother-in-law is another who has, but it seems to vary on who you see whether they advocate this dietary route or medication. The more people like you who shout from the roof tops that it is possible the more lives will be changed, and possibly saved. Congratulations.ViewDate:

Was life in the past preferable to today?I usually find it easy to vote in these questions but this one has me stumped and I don't think there's one simple answer; there were/are good in both eras Imo If only we could have the sense of community which was more apparent back then it would make life much better, but how on earth did we manage to live without the internet. Yes Dads are more involved in childcare now, but back in the day Mums were at home caring for the children not out working to help make ends meet. The list of comparisons goes on and on and I won't list them all, but it seems to me that different eras have different positives and negatives and it's not easy to make simple choices about which is preferable. Interesting thinking about it though :)ViewDate:

Should National Service be reintroduced in the UK?I was an army cadet instructor a few years ago and many of the kids were from a deprived, problematic neighbourhood. Being in the cadets was such a positive activity for many of them and a few even joined the army, making successful careers for themselves while their peers were on the streets using drugs, alcohol and turning to crime, so yes I believe National Service should be re-introduced.ViewDate:

The Nation's Mental HealthThe reason that schizophrenics start taking their medication again is not because of the discomfort of withdrawal but because they become incapable of functioning. Their symptoms include delusions, hearing voices and they often become a danger to themselves or others. Perhaps you would like to read a book about this one specific mental health problem which necessitates medical intervention rather than generalising about all mental health issues which can't all be lumped together under the same heading and need different treatments, if any are needed. Incidentally, talking therapies are becoming more popular than pharmaceutical therapies nowadays which is perhaps where your own successful recovery began when you spoke to that gentleman.ViewDate:

The Nation's Mental HealthI absolutely agree that there is an intrinsic link between the body and mind so find myself agreeing (with my heels firmly dug in the ground haha) with you Jane but I have never nor intend to study dianetics. I also agree with you about the need for more contact with nature and the natural world in order for some relief for more minor mental health problems. However, there are many more major conditions which are consistently shown to respond only to medication and those who are afflicted by these illnesses relapse sadly back into appalling states when they stop taking medication. E.g., I had a friend who had schizophrenia who was able to manage life well when taking her medication but when she stopped, as most schizophrenics do at one point or another because they understandably dislike the feeling of not being in control of themselves or their emotions, and no amount of nature or natural living enabled her to avoid relapsing, so it is not a cure all for everyone. Unfortunately for some people medication is the only option to help them to live in the community and without it they would probably be unable to enjoy any sort of normality (sorry, I loathe that word, but it fits here)ViewDate:

The Nation's Mental HealthWhat you suggest makes a lot of sense for people who are 'down in the dumps' or feeling a bit fed up Jane, but what I wrote in the OP was regarding more serious issues; the huge rise in self harm of all sorts, suicides, the sort of depression and mental illness that prevents any sort of normal functioning I'm still wondering what is causing this and why it's on the increase.ViewDate:

What book are you currently reading?Yes I believe that, thoughts are as real and potent as actions Imo and have the power to create actual changes within the body. I would go further and say that I believe they also create reactions and life events outside the body vibrating out into the world.ViewDate:

Lack of fundingHow right you are Lionel. Mme May's manifesto speech full of promises to make life full of equal opportunity for everyone regardless of background, etc was typical politician speak and will make no difference at all to the struggles being coped with (or not) by every single department in the government thanks to the cuts mentioned in the OP. Back to the standards of the Victorian period seems highly likely. I won't be voting for this in the election either Adrian.ViewDate:

The Nation's Mental HealthI completely agree with much of what you say Yodama, labels are a modern day curse for sure, but the fact that people are being labelled is an indication, for me, that there is pressure to conform to some societal pressure of 'normality' and is this where the pressure which results in depression and anxiety which is rife throughout society, to the extent that there are now plans in place to have mental health staff in every school in the country begins? As I understand it, doctors are now offering talking therapies before medication to help, so Big Pharma are losing their foothold on this market if not necessarily others, but the question remains why are we so vulnerable to outside influences now? Is the fact that our children are succumbing to this at earlier and earlier ages relevant? Perhaps the amount of technology involved in school lessons, as well as the amount they use out of school is influencing their mental health? How many adults do we know who don't have regular access to the internet, and are not permanently attached to something electronic? Friendships consist of the amount of people who 'like' something you have posted on Facebook - people you neither know nor will ever meet, although I know some families do use it for keeping in touch. Must say here, this is what I understand, as I have never been tempted to join the FB crowd. Again, you are right Yodama, there should be more drop in centres for the lonely and all mobiles should be switched off when you enter so people could remember how to make conversation, and I would love something like this in my area especially if all the people who are a bit different, and in my experience far more interesting, were to gather there. This is a personal plea for everyone to just be themselves and stop trying to paste on an image of successful 'sameness' to be accepted by an increasingly stressed society which feels it needs to labelled normal.ViewDate:

Is political correctness in our modern society, being taken too far or have we got the balance right? What are your views?Yes it makes you wonder doesn't it Carole. Would we have been offended when we were younger and there were programmes like the Black and White Minstrels for example when no-one batted an eyelid, but because these days we are all so conscious of being PC, we pick up on anything that just might be construed as racist/sexist........anything 'ist'? Ladies and the menopauseWe're in a similar position then Kate. I also had a PE several years ago (forgot to mention it in my OP) but despite this and the DVTs my GP hasn't refused to prescribe HRT, as I am on anti-coagulant medication for life which 'should' prevent further clots. It has been my decision to stop taking it after mother and uncle suffered TIAs and now have vascular dementia which scares me witless. So sorry to read that you're enduring these awful symptoms still. It makes me mad that some people just don't understand how debilitating the physical and emotional effects of hormonal imbalance can be.
