CaroleAH's bio
I live in North Yorkshire and I am happily retired after working nearly 40 years for the NHS – initially in A&E reception and then as a Practice Manager for a surgery in Leeds. I am an active member of my local U3A – on the committee and a member of various groups including a Book Group, Singing for Fun, Gardening and Science & Technology to name just a few. I love photography – mainly landscapes, seascapes, architecture, especially churches and cathedrals, and plants. My cameras tend to stay on fully automatic because my mind goes blank when the experts start talking about depth of field, white noise - what is that all about for heaven's sake, and other technicalities! I am also interested in genealogy and have compiled many family trees for relatives and those for the men commemorated on the local war memorial – that was an interesting project for 2014 and updated in 2018; not sure that I shall be around for 2045 to update the WW2 details! -

New here so just wanting to say hello to all.Hi Seraphim, Have you looked at your local u3a website? They generally have loads of "interest" groups ranging from book groups, holiday, gardening, wine-tasting, walking, singing for fun etc. I joined my local group about 12 years ago and there's always something to join in with if the fancy takes you. This week I have attended the Singing for Fun session and tomorrow will be going to a near-by garden centre withe the Gardening group for a demonstration of the best plants to fill hanging-baskets and tubs. Good luck!ViewDate:

Schoolboy discipline!Great poem, Mick. I remember one particularly vicious teacher at my primary school who hit me on the head with the long pole used to open the high windows because I was looking at the snow falling outside and also another time he made me write 100 lines whilst standing up on a chair! Mr Ellis, you were awful - but I'm still here to tell the tale :-)ViewDate:

New to SilversurfersHi Seraphim, Have you looked at your local u3a website? They usually have a lot of interest groups from book groups, gardening, holidays to wine-tasting and anything else inbetween. I have made a lot of new friends since I joined and have been on holidays and days out with the garden group and the holiday group so there's never an excuse for being bored!ViewDate:

Sewerage in our back garden for 8 yearsThis is a terrible situation for you to be living in, Knottyjune. You say that you live in social housing - surely the people from whom you rent your house, whether it be a housing association or your local council, have some legal responsibility to ensure that your accommodation is fit for purpose. If they refuse to help then I would write to them (recorded delivery) and say that you will withhold your rent and also inform local newspapers asking them to take up the cudgel on your behalf. Good luck!ViewDate:

Should menopause be classed as a disability? The menopause is certainly not a disability BUT it can cause huge problems for some women and should be recognised as a problem from which every woman who menstruates will suffer from at some point in her life. Unfortunately not every male doctor appreciates this - I was told when I was having exceptionally heavy periods that "at your age it won't last for long"! I then saw a female GP who gave me medication which helped. Perhaps by bringing the subject into the open, both male and female colleagues will show some empathy.ViewDate:

My young nephew wants fashionable very expensive clothes. Am I being unreasonable?Hi Felix, You haven't given us a great deal of information! How old is your nephew and what were you buying him? I come from a fairly large family and it used to cost me a fortune buying birthday and Christmas presents for my nieces and nephews and then their children as well. Incidentally, I was lucky if I even got a birthday or Christmas card from them so when I retired I told them that I couldn't afford to buy them all presents anymore. I still send birthday and Christmas cards but that is it.ViewDate:
