Publishig a bookWell done for what you have achieved so far Koda, personally I would use Amazon it has a wide audience (I check it every day) and there are great success stories (e.g. Hugh Howie a personal favourite of mine) if your work attracts interest it will be picked up by a mainstream publisher from there. Always check the requirements for submission of manuscripts whoever you decide to go with, most are double spaced and do spellcheck, if you are not confident you could use a friend to read it through and make corrections. It's really important to get the opinions of other people before publishing - in fact it would be a great idea to start a writers group on this site where people can get the opinions of others. I really wish you the best of luck with this - you are further ahead in this endeavour than I am.ViewDate:

How can I make 'real' friendsHi there, believe me you are not alone in thinking the way you do, I have been there along with numerous other people. But first I want you to start and think about the freedom you have by being on your own (watch what you want on TV, go out where and when you want to, where what you want to and eat when and whatever you want) You may say what has that got to do with making friends well usually people who suddenly seek this find themselves in changed circumstances and a good starting point is to look for the benefits in this (whatever the reason) Because it creates confidence and once you realise just how strong you really are you impress other people and they will be more likely to want to be part of your circle. I know how difficult it is - you already do voluntary work so you meet all kinds of people, do you come across as the strong dependable person you really are, do you invite people for coffee/tea, do you offer to help with upcoming events? Do you ask and show interest about family? Most important and sometimes most difficult do you smile? Radiate that cheery personality, be someone that others can rely on and they will. Have a really good Christmas.ViewDate:

HelloHey there, just read your message one year on! how's it going this year? You know it does get easier, I have been alone for 7 years now and every year it gets better. Be open minded, never refuse an invitation (you can always leave early) and remember you need to give to receive so give cards to your neighbours, offer help where its needed - I visit my neighbour in his care home each weekend with his wife and I really enjoy it. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy helping out. Try out new things like rambling. Your message came up when I searched for U3A that is university of the third age its all over the world, your can join groups meet new people and change your life so if you have time try it out. Hope the dark times are over for you, have a really good Christmas.ViewDate:

Win a £50 Amazon eVoucher!I visit Amazon daily, it is a good source of book reviews, though usually I order the books I want to read from my local library. However I often cannot resist the kindle daily deals.ViewDate:

Just joined so I'm introducing myself.Hi everyone I am recently retired so have some time on my hands, just finding my way around this site it seems to change everytime I visit, I thought there used to be a place for posting blog entries but seem to have lost it. Anyway happy to talk to anyone on here. I live in Bedfordshire, like scifi and history and of course science, and I have a dog. Oh and I also am into gardening and if anyone has a method of getting rid of or controlling rampant bamboo growth please get in touch.ViewDate:

Should we do another moon landing?Agree with you totally, would suggest those people not of this opinion look up online the brilliant documentary '10 Billion' I watched it on sky and got a wake up call for what life will be like for your grandchildren when they are adults. So without limits on populations which no-one wants this earth cannot support more people so we have to expand. This means going somewhere else. Money alone will not fix the problems that overpopulation brings so whatever the cost we need to look to expansion in the future.ViewDate:

How easy is it really to get a job when you're over 50?Agree with your attitude, older people do have a wealth of experience, I love gardening though it is not my career I appreciate there is work out there for independent people willing to take it on. Also people who care about their gardens do want someone who knows what they are talking about so they can give advice. Go freelance, set your prices according to the time and work involved, might pay to get some business cards printed and in no time word of mouth can build your reputation. Not everyone wants just the lawns and hedges cut though that can be a good start. -
