Peter's Gardening Tips for September 2019Peter, a while ago you advised me on Geranium storage here in Poland. I have another for you. I am making alterations to the main part of the garden and my Leeks are in the way of my plans. They are all very healthy, can I move them if I make deep holes and fill with water in advance and ensure I take all the small roots. The soil here is very fertile and completely stone free.ViewDate:

Clever uses for tennis ballsFollowing the days of a new type of car key, supposedly more secure I lost my keys whilst out shopping, I called the local police for help to be asked make & model of car, they suggested going to buy a new tennis ball, cutting a hole in it to fit around the key hole in the car door, hold steady and hit t.ball with other hand. It worked, apparently because of air pressure on the new keys, as my parents used to say Bob's your Uncle and Fanny's your Aunt ~ job doneViewDate:

Will you be voting in the European Elections this month?Whilst fiercely patriotic I no longer live in the UK and do not feel I should vote, I have voted twice on the subject of Europe already the first when I voted not to join the EEC, my decision being based on my belief that we would end up where we have in fact ended up, and then to leave the EU, which vote was totally ignored ! A recent MORI Poll suggests that the majority of EU citizens feel the Union will collapse in less than 20 years, I personally feel it will not last that long but will never understand why so many British people seem to prefer federalism over democratic sovereigntyViewDate:

Would you support a delay to the final EU departure?I am 71, I voted against joining in the first referendum and voted to leave in the 2nd. Deal or no deal we should leave in March. What happened to the Treason Laws, treason is defined as 'someone who tries to overthrow the Sovereign or Government', surely this is just what Messrs, Hesletine, Blair & Clegg were trying to do when they published in a German Newspaper. We will shortly be remembering those who fell for our freedom in two World Wars and I hope none of those voting to Remain will have the audacity to wear a poppy, which is not an ornament but a sign that we remember the sacrifice so many made for the freedom the remain campaign seemingly want to give away. They are a disgrace to their Queen and Country.ViewDate:

Would you consider retiring abroad?I left the UK 6 years ago on my 65th birthday to retire to France with my Polish wife, however after 3 years we realised that it would be wrong on my part to pop my clogs and leave her in a country she didn't know and so we moved to Poland, which has proved to be quite literally the best decision I have ever made. My Pension was barely enough to live on in the UK, whereas here it is multiplied by the exchange rate, currently 4.73 Zloty to £1, but has been as high as 6 with the added benefit of 1 Zloty buying as much as £1 buys in the UK. We managed to buy a beautiful 240 sq.m house with initially 3 bathrooms and 3 kitchens, both now reduced to two on a 1,000sq.m plot of land with and additional 180 sq.m of garages and work shops, so I am never bored as I love gardening and woodwork. Oh, the cost of the house £60,000. In short I would recommend this area to any retiree, lovely people, countryside and a very safe environment. Also a good investment as our property has already increased in value by almost 60% in 2 years.ViewDate:

Should the collection plate go contactless?I agree with you John, my grand parents were both missionaries in Central Africa and helped to build there own Church, although I don't believe these grand buildings are necessary these days for worship.ViewDate:

Should the collection plate go contactless?Jeanmark, you are right of course, but I do feel the time has come to liquidate some of the very under-utilised assets, a dwindling number of vicars are now having to cover several parishes in rural areas, rather than do that I am sure the respective parishioners would travel to the vicar's parish, then the closed churches can become refuges for the needy of which there are too many.ViewDate:

Should the collection plate go contactless? The 2 major churches in the UK, Protestant and Catholic are among the richest institutions in the UK and I feel that rather than trying to boost their income, they should be looking to give more back. With so many people living rough why don't they use some of the seldom frequented churches and under utilised vicarages to put a roof over peoples heads. I am surprised they haven't thought of installing turnstiles !!ViewDate:

Is 'affluenza' eroding our happiness?I'm not sure that I agree with Lionel when he says a want becomes a need, as more often than not it is not a need, just a desire to keep up with others. Thankfully I have jumped off than bandwagon and live very comfortably and happily on my state pension. If I need something I look for used items or where I can recycle and make. Greed and avarice are destroying society, how many people actually need large 4 x 4 off road vehicles? They have become a status symbol frequently purchased on credit, we are living in a world that is rapidly becoming alien to me, hopefully if our self centered politicians can get their act together there will be a small chance that England can return to the wonderful place it once was, when people felt secure and where family and friendships were more important than wealth and status.ViewDate:

Songs from the 60s PlaylistAlthough a scally, I was never keen on Cilla's singing, but liked most of the 60's music and still both play and sing it today, but probably my two favourites are Let's Dance by Chris Montez and What'd I Say from the Newport Album by Ray Charles as it one of the very few recordings with the full introduction. All music of Chuck Berry, all early Elvis, Gene Vincent, Billy Fury, and of course the Liverpool Groups of Mersey Beat many of which never really got to national fame like Derry Wilkie who used to play at The Odd Spot in Bold Street. Memories eh!!ViewDate:

Should all stores introduce gender neutral changing rooms? As long as changing cubicles have a door and a lock I don't see where the problem is, if there is only a curtain then 'no', as there will always be an idiot who pulls the curtain at an inappropriate time. 20 years ago I used to go to a Créperie in Concarneau who had neutral gender toilets and I admit the first time a woman brushed passed me to go to the cubicle whilst I was at a urinal shocked me somewhat, but we do seem to get hung up about these things. I am sure when people have friends around they allow them to go the the bathroom regardless of their gender, where's the difference ??ViewDate:

Should Theresa May stay or go?Her MP's should stop all this internal bickering and jostling for personal positions and give her the help and support needed to get us through to Brexit in the most cost efficient way. She is a lovely lady who perhaps lacks some of the cut and thrust required against the likes of Barnier and Juncker, who will continue their intransigence simply because they are fearful ot what will happen to the EU when we leave, but with whole hearted party support she will help us to get there.ViewDate:

Should tackles and scrums be prohibited from school rugby fields?Under 14's should be limited to touch tackles and 5 man scrums, 15 and over should learn the normal game and the rules that apply to it, we have a long history in the sport and long may it continue.ViewDate:

Is “old” an age or an attitude?I've just spent 2 weeks with my 98 yr old father and in age terms 'old' is appropriate, but his attitude is to let nothing beat him, he does exercises daily, cooks 3 meals a day, still drives to the shops and to get his 'sweeties' (his term for pills) and does his own laundry, although does have someone to iron for him. I still feel young as I approach 71.ViewDate:

Peter’s Gardening tips for August 2017Peter. Now 70, I have been a keen gardener for 60 years, I now live in Poland and have a large garden and am having to re-learn climate differences, but our first year Veg crop has been remarkable, however I have never really found a good way to over winter Geraniums. It can go to minus 30 degrees here, can you advise please. DavidViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsSue. I am 70 and live with my Polish wife in Poland, I don't speak Polish save for hello and goodbye, but do chat with my wife of course, but always happy to chat, I am a 'Scouser' and have a not untypical Liverpudlian sense of humour, but if you ever feel lonely would be happy to natter, hopefully laugh a little, you have a cheery face and so probably have a sense of humour too. You would also be welcome here for a holiday if you wanted one, there are always friends out there, just not always easy to find them. All the best, DavidViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsDo some of other oldies like me remember Billy Bean and Yoo-Hoo on TV, I used to watch it regularly on our first B&W TV and found my self singing the song, so looked it up on the Internet. It ran from late 1953 to 1956. " Billy Bean built a machine to see what it could do, he built it our of sticks and stones and nuts and bolts and glue", I can't recall anymore although am sure there were more words. Very passé for the younger generation these days I'm sure.ViewDate:

Does the country need a new 'caretaker' prime minister?I think it is high time politicians stopped jostling for position and put party politics and personal ambition to one side and put the country, it's people and their desire to return to a free self governing country first.ViewDate:

Gardener's report! What you need are umbrellas Mick to protect the veg that are feeling sick But be thankful for the rain when it falls for with me the lack of it really galls Most days for water I have to pay for the rain decides it will stay away I retired to Poland with Polish wife and whilst I have a wonderful life My garden suffers from too little rain So I water and water again and again Like all gardeners we moan at our lot But nonetheless we attend to our plot.ViewDate:

Should fox hunting be legal again? You're quite right Bird of Paradise, I used to Debate on behalf of the Fox and right about us humans getting better control of things, but controls could be put on the hunters requiring humanity and I do feel that the fox population needs controlling, but it is to be put to a 'free vote' and we the people can make the decision, probably to keep the ban in place.ViewDate:

Should fox hunting be legal again? The huge rise in the population of Urban foxes is in part because they have not found a way to keep their population under control, which hunting helps to achieve. Whilst it is the so called sport of the elite, it does nonetheless serve a useful purposeViewDate:

Should the State Pension be means tested?I contributed for almost 50 yrs, The State Pension is not a gift from the Government but an often partial repayment of the contributions made. I am sure there are some wealthy people who would volunteer to donate a part of their pension, but it should not be mandatory. I live on my basic State Pension but can only do so by choosing to live in Poland, it was not enough to sustain life for my Polish wife and I in the UK living in modest rented accommodation. The basic State Pension is insufficient and should be increased to reflect the real cost of living for us older people.
