Has Theresa May got the right financial balance for pensioners? Please correct me if I am wrong but at the moment it is my belief that costs for long term care in a nursing or care home already have to be paid for and the value of the family home is taken into account with just around £23k left. Presumably that figure will now come up to £100k in line with the new rule on home care. So for anyone who has care in a care home the Govt will get £77k less. For anyone living in poorer areas of the country where the value of a property is lower the Govt will also lose £77k For those very rich I am sure they will find a way of avoiding payment so the get loses again! In summary they will not get enough from this new scheme to fund social care but all they are doing is imposing a new inheritance tax on the middle class in the south who are their traditional voters but where they will still win in the election. On the other hand it will be more popular in traditional labour seats where they hope to win seats. By the way it appears any monies will not be taken whilst a spouse is living in the property.ViewDate:

Should the Winter Fuel Allowance be means tested?I have just finished watching the Andrew Marr show which featured Damian Green from the Conservatives. He stated they were proud to have brought Pensioner Poverty down to 14%, in another part of the interview he stated only those in genuine need of the WFP would receive it. Joining those two comments together it seems to me only those on about a level of income which allows them to receive pension credit will receive WFP. This is a long way from just taking it from the very rich.ViewDate:

Has Theresa May got the right financial balance for pensioners?Looking at the present system where the value of the primary residence is already taken into account if someone needs care in a residential home this is NOT the case if a spouse or dependent lives there, presumably this will still be the case. See Age UK website for further details.ViewDate:

Has Theresa May got the right financial balance for pensioners? That is an interesting point which I have also been thinking about but no, no-one, probably not even Theresa May can answer that at this time. It is the same with money held in a joint account, how can they tell what part belongs to the sick partner and what part to the other? With my house the position is slightly different in that it is just in my name so presumably if I need care my wife is just left with £100k but if she needs care she does not pay.ViewDate:

Has Theresa May got the right financial balance for pensioners? You are allowed to keep £100k in assets, as far as I can see that would include a second property. Whilst it may seem very easy to just transfer the property into your sons name as you only have to complete a simple HM Land Registry form please be very careful as this may have tax implications as it would be classed as a gift and there is an annual limit. You would be wise to consult with a solicitor before taking any action. As regards other people living in the property they do not appear to have taken this into consideration but I think public outcry would be too great if they started throwing people out on the streets. After all another part of the manifesto is to end homelessness. I do not think you should worry at this stage, thankfully you do not have a degenerative disease and hopefully never will. There are also too many questions to be answered before we know the full scope of this proposal. Bring on the Pensioners Revolt.ViewDate:

Should the Winter Fuel Allowance be means tested?I do feel it very ironic that the reason May is confident enough to bring in this idea is because she feels she will win the election. The reason she will win is because she is the strong voice for brexit. Of course if the Country had not voted for Brexit we would not be having this election and who were the people who mostly voted for brexit, the over 60's who will now be suffering. I think the winter fuel payment should be scrapped entirely but the pension should be increased by a similar amount. That way it would be taxed meaning it costs the Country less whilst those most in need receive the most.
