Assisted living a helping hand to enjoy later living to the full

Many people in later life can feel increasingly burdened by everyday tasks or by a lack of accessible support, affecting both their wellbeing and quality of life.

At Mickle Hill, the contemporary later living village for over 60s in Pickering, North Yorkshire, retirees can enjoy onsite care support and assistance on all aspects of day-to-day life from the comfort of their own home, allowing them to enjoy retirement in confidence knowing that support is on hand if needed.

The village, operated by MHA, offers residents personalised care packages to provide companionship and help with daily tasks such as getting dressed, washing and preparing meals, or short-term rehabilitation following an operation. These flexible services are offered onsite and on a 24/7 basis, and packages are tailored to each residents’ needs and preferences with a focus on maintaining their dignity and privacy and encouraging their independence.

Mickle Hill residents live as part of a supportive community made up of like-minded individuals, with activities and clubs regularly organised to allow them to socialise with one another. Social groups, days out, and exercise classes are also on offer to allow residents to find new hobbies, make new friends, and enjoy their retirement to the full.

Resident of Mickle Hill Mrs Le Page, 90, moved from her large home in Gloucestershire where she had lived for over 50 years. Her daughter comments, “My main concern was that my mother lived far out of any village and a long way from any shops. She was very dependent on other people and I couldn’t always be there for her due to the distance. Following my father passing away earlier in the year, another major concern was that she became isolated and lonely.”

“It took a while for her to get used to the property’s facilities and the village’s amenities, but the other residents have been very welcoming and immediately reached out to show her the ropes, which was really nice. My mum said she really likes her new bungalow and finds it very cosy. It’s nice to see her smile and it gives me real peace of mind to know that she is close by and no longer on her own in a property that’s too large for her. The staff are also very friendly and supportive and it’s a great relief to know that onsite care and support is always on hand, should my mum require it.”

Another resident, Georgina Hudson, 79, had started to suffer from early stage memory problems which caused her to withdraw from the community before her sons encouraged a move to Mickle Hill. She now receives daily support with her house chores and members of staff regularly visit to check-in with her.

Georgina’s son John Hudson says, “Retirement communities are a relatively new concept, so Mum initially thought it was a care home. But the beauty of Mickle Hill is its sense of independence and space. She quickly realised that there is a very strong presence of community because it really feels like a village. And that’s important for Mum, because she was always very active in her community.”

“Early onset Dementia can make people withdraw from engaging in the community because social interactions become more difficult. Mum is enjoying being encouraged to join in with activities and meet new people. This is something that would never have happened had she not moved.”

Prices for two-bedroom bungalows at Mickle Hill start from £275,000. One and two bedroom apartments within The Pavilion are available from £199,950.
