Downsize with Your Pet at Mickle Hill

Did you know April was National Pet Month?

The celebration aims to raise awareness on the benefits of owning a pet, many of whom form an integral part of the household. In fact, a recent survey by PFMA revealed that 16 percent of households in Yorkshire and the Humber owned a cat, whilst 22 percent owned a dog*. Four-legged companions can play an important part in helping to combat loneliness for the elderly, who sometimes fear they may have to leave their pet behind when the time comes to downsize.

Offering an alternative to that dreaded outcome is pet-friendly retirement living specialist Mickle Hill in Pickering, North Yorkshire. The village welcomes residents as well as their cats and dogs in a mixture of 168 one- and two-bedroom apartments which were specifically designed for the elderly. Residents can enjoy a number of amenities around the ‘Pavilion’, the village’s entertainment hub, including a cinema, gym, Jacuzzi, library, café bistro and a convenience shop.

Owners can also explore the beautiful surrounding nature with their four-legged friend. “There’s so much to do around here and it’s a beautiful area,” comments resident Janet Ainsworth, 76, who moved to Mickle Hill with her cockapoo Honey in February 2017. “The Yorkshire Dales aren’t far at all, and the sea is only 30 minutes away too.”

She adds: “I knew instantly this was just a wonderful place. It felt like home from the very start. Honey loves the apartment and running on the ground floor patio, she’s so full of energy. She is a great constant companion, and I’m really happy she was able to move in with me.”

Pavilion apartments feature a 24-hour emergency alarm system as well as an audio and video door entry system for enhanced security. Wet rooms offer step free access in and out of the shower for residents, as well as a pull cord for emergencies. Plug sockets throughout are at waist height, and the apartments are fully wheelchair accessible. Included telephone and broadband access also allows residents to remain connected to their friends and family.
