A breeze in the willows

Just had a narrow boat holiday with some good friends..it was so peaceful..

A Breeze in the Willows

Three miles an hour..we just dawdle along,
Hardly a sound…except gentle birdsong.
Past buttercup meadows..blue sky and green grass,
Trees lining the banks..giving shade as we pass.

Reeds and rushes wave in the breeze,
A hiding place..where nobody see’s.
Hardly a ripple..from our narrowboats prow,
And no one to see us..just the odd curious cow.

Ducks with their ducklings..swans like white snow,
Move aside as we come..and watch as we go.
We’re at peace with the world as we drift through the day,
Our worries and problems..a million miles away.

As dusk slowly falls..we tie up for the night,
And life on the river..goes to sleep till first light.
We sit and relax..think of days now long past,
When life was much slower..not hectic and fast.

Horses on towpaths..so supple and strong,
No engines to help them..just plodding along.
Bedding down for the night..with a Hay Net or oats,
Harnessed up in the morning with dew on their coats.

So we make up our bunks..have a last cup of tea,
Perhaps still thinking..of how it used to be.
And the last thing we hear as we sink in our pillows,
Is the comforting sound of a breeze in the willows.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
