A Grandchild’s request

This is a very touching poem about the love a child for his grandad.

A Grandchild’s request

“Can I hold your hand Grandad,
Will you watch me as I grow,
Can I hold your hand Grandad,
Will you teach me what you know,
Will you and Nanny guard me,
And shelter me inside,
And will your strong arms enfold me,
When I want to hide ?”.

“Can I hold your hand Grandad,
Will you let me grow to be,
Can I hold your hand Grandad,
Then I can be ‘me’,
For with your shadow standing,
I will hold no fear,
Not as long as you, and Nanny,
Are standing near?”.

“Can I hold your hand Grandad,
Will you sing your gentle song,
Can I hold your hand Grandad,
Will you carry me along,
And when it’s time for you to go,
When you and Nanny part,
Can I hold your hand Grandad,
At the centre of my heart?”.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
