A Poppy’s Whisper

A poem for remembrance…

A Poppy’s Whisper

A poppy to remember
sacrifices great
of those who gave their lives for us
to call a halt to hate

A memory of a loved one,
a colleague, or a friend
of endless tears, of broken hearts
that time just cannot mend

Of those who’ll never reach old age
or welcome a new dawn
for they kept their word of honour
an oath they each had sworn

A poppy to remember those
who shall never live to see
a family grow around them
or grandchildren on their knee

They’ll  never read a bedtime story
to a child tucked up so snug
they’ll never hear “I love you”
or feel the warmth of another hug

The poppy stands so tall and straight
while those who’ve fallen lay
and each one whispers with a tear
“Thank you for our today”

I'm a mother of four fantastic children (three grown up now) I took up writing again as I became disabled after a paralysing illness and needed a focus. I like to draw and paint to keep my hands busy and moving, and writing keeps my brain cells stretched, keeping the old cogs working. Of course it also keeps me out of mischief. Much love Cate
