Autumn Years

A very poignant poem written by Liz Dey about ageing

Autumn Years

Nobody tells you its painful
Nobody tells you the truth
When you’re fired from a life changing cannon
Away from the last throws of youth

The spring of my life is now over
The summer has passed pretty quick
And autumn is now thrust upon me
And set in with an almighty kick

I don’t want to be that old lady
Who mumbles and whinges and sighs
That goes shopping in old tartan slippers
With glass buttons like teddy bears eyes

My memory sometimes leaves the building
And walks off with the thoughts I once had
And I’m starting to loose bits and pieces
Like my watch and my glasses and bag

When I rise from my bed in the morning
Sound affects accompany my knees
My back clicks and groans a bit loudly
These are the things that nobody sees

Tourettes is my added affliction
Words dribble from out of my face
And I am as shocked as the next man
As my honesty gains such a pace

I will try to grow old a bit graceful
But that promise will be hard for to keep
Except when I am lying quite peaceful
And tucked in my bed fast asleep
