BC … Phone home!

BC … Phone Home! (dedicated to Barry Clarke)

In th’olden days when I wor young, I used to work away
In foreign places, seein’ ta folk who’d come on holiday.
I travelled round a fair old bit from one place to another
But no matter where , I ‘ad a care to allus ring me mother.

‘Ard to believe but in those days I ‘ad no mobile phone
So I devised a cunning plan in order to phone ‘ome.
Mum ‘ad no phone as times were ‘ard, we ‘ad to make ends meet
So luckily we had a big red box at t’top of our street.

At 3 o’clock when t’ pubs turned aht, I’d call that public box
And ‘oped some passer by would ‘ear it ringin’, fingers crossed.
“Thanks for pickin’ up” I’d say, “ Please will you ‘elp me out ?”
“Nip round to 37 and give our Shirley a shout “

“Tell ‘er ‘er Barry’s on’t dog and bone, ‘er ever lovin’ son”
And true to form those Rastrick lads made sure that that was done.
A novel way to ring yer mum, I don’t care if you scoff,
And only ever once did I get told to bugger off!
