Beware of the Trolls!

This topical poem was written by Claire Baldry who feels very sad how a few people try and spoil internet forums for the majority.

Beware of the Trolls!

They like to jab a needle in a touchy space,

An online provocation right against your face,

They seek your darkest corners and invade your souls,

They are nasty, wormlike phantoms, called the internet trolls

They post a ghastly picture, then they disappear,

Swamp your page with troubles and invade your fear,

They tunnel under virtual ground, sneaky facebook moles,

They are shadows in your backyard, called the internet trolls

They gather several emails so can change their name,

This lets them work in secret, they can hide their shame,

You’ll hardly ever spot them, as they chase their goals,

They are damaged friendless beings, called the internet trolls

So children, in your nightmares, filled with thoughts you dread,

Be grateful for the monsters underneath your bed,

They will teach you self- protection and will keep you whole,

For the time you meet a demon, called the internet troll

I really don't understand why a very small minority of internet users try to spoil it for the rest of us. I wrote this poem to vent my frustration! Here is a link to the live you tube version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYQPu7Jjlj0

Thank you Claire - I really enjoyed listening to you reading your poem.
I was a member of an internet forum for about eleven years in connection with a little business I ran. It was so helpful (especially in the early years) to be in touch with others in the same business BUT then came the trolls. At first we tried to laugh at them; ignore them; even blocked them; but regardless of what we did, they still manage to cause disruption, arguments and general unrest on the site. Thankfully I was able to ignore them most of the time but others were hurt and offended and quite a few left the forums never to return.
I often felt sad for them as it was obvious to see that they hid behind their internet name; never wanting anyone to see who they 'really' were and the fact that they never could prosper in the business and hated anyone who did.
I still dip into the forum (rarely) and some are still there. Perhaps they have nowhere else to go. How very sad.
Thank you for your poem.

Thank you so much for your comment Robbinn. This is a relatively new phenomena which we haven't yet learned to deal with. I just watched a friend become so distressed by a couple of internet trolls on a forum who were obviously working together. I needed to use my poetry to try and make sense of it!!

Hi Claire I loved your poem I have belonged to forums since the mid 90's and have come across some classic trolls personally I ignore them as I know that they want a reaction and it worked for me ,but many people as you say have bits that can be niggled at and react so feed the troll .When a troll appeared i always used to type "don't feed the trolls" thanks again for your poem it may be good to share it on my facebook xx
