Caps and Plaits

Caps and Plaits

The things that I remember
When I was really small
Were knitted cardis and a liberty bodice
And bringing in the coal.

Barley twists and liquorice sticks
And trips to Bristol Zoo
and Bread and dripping was a treat
I bet you had that too.

Playing hopscotch in the street
and pick up jack as well
skipping and scooting and riding my bike
so many games I could tell.

Mums all wore their pinnies
and would chat over the garden wall
and Mondays were always washing day
as far as I recall.

Everyone knew each other
But as Mr or Mrs not names
and doors were always on the latch
I wish things were still the same.

Navy knickers with pockets
and a hankie up your sleeve
With these two things when you went to school
It’s surprising what you could achieve.

A phone box on the corner
And Saturday morning flix
and a shop on every corner
that you went to from the Ritz.

A penny glass of lemonade
and a packet of broken crisps
And a Jublee if it was really hot
and a tanners worth of chips.

Joining in the Brownies
St. John Ambulance too
And Youth Club on a week night
There was always something to do.

Sunday School and Bible class
was a part of my childhood too
and birthday parties all at home
with friends who played with you.

It’s funny how you remember
all the things from years ago
but what happened yesterday
I’m blowed if I blooming know.
