Dear Santa

Dear Santa

It’s not yet been a year since we lost our dad
We miss very very much and often still feel sad
As Christmas approaches I know that we’ll miss him that bit more
I still expect to see him there, as I walk in through their door

I visit mum and walk right by his chair that’s in the bay
It doesn’t seem right to sit there when we visit for the day
He often didn’t say much but his presence was enough
I’d ask ‘how are are you feeling?’ and he would always bluff

‘Oh not too bad today love, I might not be here too long
I’m getting rather old now, and I don’t feel all that strong
I’ve had a really good life and out lived most my friends
And don’t forget my dear that all good things have to end!’

‘Don’t say that dad!’ I’d tell him, it was only him that laughed
He never show emotion, to cry he though was daft
He was brought up in much tougher times where his emotions he hid
And only now I know, how hard things were when he was just a kid

I look across and see my mum so lonely sitting there
It’s hard for her to sit most days and watch his empty chair
I know he didn’t say much, but he was company you see
And company for her now was short visits from the likes of me

It’s hard to get my mum to come and stay
I hope she’ll make an exception this Christmas Day
And join our family festivity if just for a short time
Then I’ll take her home again and I know that she’ll be fine

Cos she’s sort of happy there, sitting with the tele on
Across the room from dads chair although now he’s gone
I know she misses him, much more than she will say
‘I’m fine’ she smiles as I leave to go, ‘sure I’ll be ok’

So Santa I am writing, though I know it’s not to be
I just wish my dad was back at home in front of his TV
This is such a selfish thing I ask, so I could have my way
And wish my dad just one more time A Merry Christmas Day.
