Empty Nest

This poem was written by Irene Kerr who was feeling sentimental as their son and lovely wife just left Canada recently to live in London and their daughter and family live in Vancouver, hence the inspiration.

Empty Nest

You’ve heard of Empty Nesters
What does that really mean
It’s when kids grow up and leave their home
Their time to live their dream

When Grade school evolves to Uni
Each milestone marked with pride
All the precious memories
In pictures kept alive

There are no shoes or runners
Piled up at my front door
No coat boots or backpacks
Strewn upon that floor

The thud heralded their ‘arrival’
A familiar sound to know
A race to get the clicker
To watch ‘their’ tv show

Hey mom ‘what’s for dinner’
They hadn’t ate all day
When would it be ready?
As they were ‘going out to play’

So happy they were enjoying life
Wherever they chose to roam
Yet so relieved to hear the words
‘Hey mom it’s me I’m home’

The giggles and loud laughter
Such a welcome sound
Told me they had great fun
While out and ‘on the town’

All grown up and married
In cities far away
Always close to my heart
As I journey through my day

I cherish all the together times
They fill my heart with pride
To celebrate each occasion
Wherever they abide

My nest it isn’t empty
My hubby’s by my side
We are free as birds can be
Our oysters open wide

We’ll soon both be retired
To fulfill our destiny
To build a nest again anew
Let’s hope beside the sea
