Forever young

This poignant poem reminiscing of times gone by is written by Jan Millward

Forever young

I never used to think at all,
About my life when I was small.
But I have found as old I grow,
My memories do come and go.

I think about the times we had,
Mainly happy, sometimes sad.
Joyful days spent in the sun,
When days were long and full of fun.

Hours spent climbing in the trees,
Scratching arms and scraping knees.
Daisy chains and butterflies,
Sparkling streams and clear blue skies.

Chasing rainbows, catching frogs.
Throwing balls for panting dogs.
Picnic baskets full to burst,
Lemonade to quench our thirst.

Building dens with my best friend,
It seemed those days would never end.
But in my heart I’m still that girl,
The one with golden hair that curls.

All of those that I held dear,
Are in my mind so crystal clear.
And when I close my eyes I see,
The things that mattered most to me.

My mother, father, sister, brother.
The darling man who was my lover.
Memories worth more than gold,
Are precious gifts as I grow old.

And when I want to go back there,
I shut my eyes, recline my chair,
And reunite my heart and mind,
With those I thought I’d left behind.
