I Remember the Moors

The Moors

We hadn’t any money, so we used to walk for miles
Both of us were townies….I’d never heard of stiles
He took me out onto the moors, the day began a flop
For when the pavement disappeared my feet inclined to stop

The mud was quite disgusting, so smelly, dark and boggy
No consolation either as the sandwiches were soggy.
Another disappointment were the sorry, mangey sheep
I’d seen them in my storybooks, alongside Miss Bo-Peep

But what about the openness, not a brick in sight
Then when it came to sunset, an amazing, glourious light
The wind was cold and skittish, which made the grasses sing
We came to love the music, a lone curlews voice could bring.

Lived in town but tramped the moors anytime we could
(Though I’d still walk for half a mile, to avoid a patch of mud)
Sadly he’s not with me, so I don’t go on my own
But many times I think of him, as I sit here alone

He’s out among the heather, or by a rushing brook
Found a nest of robins eggs and whispering take a look
May the moors go on forever……the one thing that I plead
Don’t do anything to spoil them, think of nature………not man’s greed

I have always written poetry but when my husband died suddenly I used it as a kind of therapy. I don’t usually share these unless I feel they will help someone in distress. The ones I share are mostly humorous intended to bring a smile in what I feel can be a very lonely world... I have written four booklets and now a Corona chronicles which is just twelve poems writ while I am in jail...oh sorry I meant lockdown. Am on my way for a second booklet.. Trying to make folk smile and take a minutes release from these difficult times helps me forget my sight problems..
