Insomnia

Insomnia can be a problem for many of us at certain times.  Kathy Thomas has written this poignant poem which eloquently describes feelings of being awake during the night.

Insomnia

The minutes tick while I fail to ignore the bleak, inexorable night.
Thoughts tumbling in a disordered mind, I struggle restlessly
As he lays, peacefully breathing, ignorant of my helpless fight
As sleep resists me relentlessly.

Those long gone come back to me as I am lying here.
I am reminded of things long past, those unkind words spoken in haste
Come back to haunt my tortured mind as I relive my fear.
Was it a fault of mine all those times and chances gone to waste?

As the impossibility strikes me I rise and leave my plight
To seek some comfort elsewhere in the cold and empty rooms.
I light the flames to heat my soul and a soft glow fills the night.
And the purring of a soft friend eases my previous gloom.

Suddenly it doesn’t matter that I am awake while others sleep.
This time is mine, and mine alone to do with as I will.
It inexplicably seems normal, the extraordinary hours I keep.
My mind becomes clearer and I find my thoughts are at last still.

I order into words the thoughts that fill my quieted mind,
I lay them out on a blank page, my release, my ease at last.
In the early hours incredibly creativity I find
The words come effortlessly to my hand, my torment now has passed.

Then, only then, can I return to sleep peacefully in my bed.
To cool sheets and soft pillows, a soft comfort to delight.
As morning light creeps across the sky I can calmly lay my head
My mind is now no longer prone to those terrors that benight.
