It’s A Sighted World

It’s a Sighted World

I’m blind and it’s a sighted world but I don’t want to complain,
About the feelings of frustration but I’ll do my best to explain,
Though I am registered blind I still have some sight,
that may seem like a contradiction.
Life gets harder every day coping with this affliction,

I wake up in the morning, take a long look at the clock.
Then I start to worry about the colour of a sock,
Does this tie go with this suit, are these two shoes the same?
It really is a struggle like a never ending game.

Next thing I am in a hurry and I really have to rush
If you only knew how hard it is getting toothpaste on the brush,
Just close your eyes and try it when you have some time to spare
And just like me, you’ll find the toothpaste getting everywhere

Sometimes when I’m shopping, and I am out there in the street
The roaring sound of traffic drowns the sound of walking feet.
I want to cross the road, I wait, and find it so absurd,
Why people each side of me walk off without a word.

There are those of course, who will help you cross and tightly grab your arm
And others will say,”just wait there”, so you wait keeping calm.
Then hands are placed upon your back, and you’re launched into space
You’ll never know the dangers we blind folk have to face.

Cars parked on pavements, ladders, holes, the silence of a bike,
All these are hazards to the blind,I can names more if you like.
Display boards, low hanging branches, that unlevel paving stone,
Yes it is rather a dangerous world out there especially on your own.

The Supermarket prices are not the easiest things to see,
Tins of peas, beans, fruit or cat food all look the same to me
I’m not much good at shopping now and again I like to try
An assistant will usually help you, if you know what you want to buy.

Shopkeepers shout loud to make me understand,
They wrap my fingers round my change and squeeze my hand.
I know there being kind and don’t want me to loose my money
It makes me feel like a child again, and I find it rather funny.

Eating can be a problem, when you can’t see what is on your plate
I feel so terribly clumsy, and I get in an awful state.
Mash potatoes are quite easy,I have no trouble with those
Chips are a different matter,I’ve been known to get them up my nose.

My Wife is often asked, “Does he take sugar in his tea?”
This makes me really angry, why can’t they just ask me?
If they gently touched my arm, they would get my attention
That’s just a little tip I thought I would mention.

I lost my eye when I was six with a stone thrown in the street,
But there is no escaping blindness, for it runs in my Family,
I take after my Mother and my Son takes after me.
I learned about guide dogs, how to read braille and the use of white sticks,

The symbol cane, the guide cane and the long cane to name but three.
Of all the modes of mobility for me the guide dog is the best,
But I won’t disgard my guide cane, sometimes I give my dog a rest.
I have four other senses that function very well,

And I’ll always be grateful for hearing, touch sense and smell,
If I could only make one wish,I’d wish with all my might,
That I’d been fortunate to have the gift of Perfect Sight.
