Enjoy this descriptive poem about mid-summer; St Swithin’s Day falls on July 15 every year. According to tradition, whatever the weather is on that day it will continue for the next 40 days and 40 nights.  Let’s hope for sunshine!

The ‘Mid-Summer’ month is upon us,
With a background of beauty galore,
Where the birds sing a heavenly chorus,
All God’s blessings, outside our back door.

Will ‘St Swithin’, refrain from foretelling,
With the barometer high on the day,
For the corn in the ear is for swelling,
And the harvest set fair for the hay.

Sing fair songs for the height of the season,
Let the ‘Cumulus Nimbus’ stay far,
Give us hope, give us heart, give us reason,
Clearer days till the evenings bright star.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.

Another wonderful poem Mick. If its true with St Swithin’s Day and 40 days after we are looking forward to the hottest summer ever. Blue sky's here and must be about 75 F already!

Ah, there you Mick. Lovely poem. I was wondering where you were. Probably away with your writing hat on. Good to read you again.
