My name

Thank you to all the Doctors, nurses, and other, unseen hospital staff and ancillary groups who are there for us all on a daily basis – taken for granted by many – but so very appreciated by those of us who notice! God bless you all, for being there for us in our time of need.

My name

I see all the heartaches, I see all the tears,
I do what I can to quieten the fears,
By giving assurance, and just, ‘being there’,
Most people take heart, from the name that I bear.

For, my name is, ‘Nurse’, and that is my task,
To bring healing for sickness, that’s all that I ask,
It’s not for the money, for my pay is low,
But my pride is my banner, wherever I go.

For your time of worry, is my time to care,
And to help you recover from your time in there,
A hospital bed, can be lonely for some,
Who wait for a visitor coming from home.

My job is my ‘calling’, my job is my pride,
To help and assist you, to stand at your side,
When illness befalls you, or accidents call,
Bed – pans provided, – I deal with it all.

A, ‘thank you’, is welcomed, it proves I exist,
And I am not a ghost that fades into the mist,
I am there in the bad times, when things look their worse,
But, I help, and I heal you – My name is ‘Nurse!’.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
