No More

There’s a dent in the duvet,
Warm breathe on my cheek,
A paw on my chest
As closeness you seek.

Gone is the dent in the duvet,
No warmth blowing on my face,
No dreaming paws  on my midriff,
Just an awful ache in their place.

No balls to throw,
no toys to chew,
Because when I saw them,
They reminded me of you.

I keep glimpsing you here.
hearing you there.
Seeing the chewed chair legs,
and coats covered in hair.

Your collar and lead are waiting,
They are still hanging by the door,
Oh what I wouldn’t give;
to see muddy paw prints across the floor.

The dent in the duvet has gone now,
the winter nights are cold,
But the dent in my heart stays with me,
Oh why do we have to grow old?
