Not Enough Rain

A Raindance for France and the Low Countries

Not Enough Rain

All over France and the Low Countries,
So hot and steamy, absent breeze;
Spring and Summer have been dry,
Canicule numbers have been high.

In waterways the depth is low,
Our boats are stuck, nowhere to go.
Who would believe our ears would strain
For the hushed and gentle sound of rain?

Refreshing cool, reviving roots;
Blessed from Sou’wester to our boots
Send it down from crowding cloud;
On the rooftop splashing loud;

The smell of grass and new mown hay
Born upon the rain today.
How wonderful to hear again
The hushed and gentle sound of rain.
