Not Seen a Soul All Day

This is a poem based on a dear friend of mine.  Just a gentle reminder to us all to spare a few minutes for folks living all alone.  Just a short natter can make a world of difference to somebody’s day.

Not Seen a Soul All Day

I pass by your window and see you sat there
In your tired living room, in your old comfy chair
You beckon me over with a glint in your eye
A hint of panic, that I don’t just rush by

The window pushed open with your old walking cane
For since covid hit, outside I remain
How are you my friend, I ask with a smile
I listen intently as you natter a while

I’ve not seen a soul, just my carers you see
I don’t feel too good, what’s the matter with me?
Do you need a doctor my dear old friend?
I just need some company, I’m at my wit’s end

You speak of your life on the wide-open road
As an HGV driver with an extra wide load
Those were the days, you’d say with a smile
I’d love to go back there, just for a while

Tears prick your eyes as you mention your wife
Passed on now, she was the love of your life
Your heart is so heavy, your mind filled with pain
Longing for the day you can see her again

My dogs start to bark, a pleasant relief
Snaps your mind back to now, away from your grief
You reach out from your window, a treat in your hand
Two happy dogs, just as you planned

You say how you’re lonely and the day never ends
Grateful for your TV, your one constant friend
How no one has time to speak much with you
How they’ve all now passed on, the friends that you knew

You’re left just with memories of days now gone past
When your life felt fulfilled, but it rushed by too fast
Sat in your living room in your old comfy chair
Yearning for company as you quietly despair
