Proud Tears

An extremely poignant poem written by Mick Westwood for Remembrance Sunday

Proud Tears

Carry the flag, with your eyes wet with tears,
Stand straight and proud for today,
Salute them with pride all those heroes who died,
On those blood-ridden shores, far away.

Glisten your medals, and strong is your pride,
Heroes we call you as one,
Though your strong stature fades, you will lead the parades,
Because the freedom you bought does go on.

Remember your comrades this morning,
Those that you left in the field,
Their presence is with us forever,
The heroes, who never would yield.

Carry your standards together,
Hold them aloft to the skies,
Remember, ‘the fallen’, our brethren,
Be proud of those tears in your eyes.

In eternal gratitude for your sacrifice. – Rest In Perfect Peace !xx

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
