Remember?

A wonderful, nostalgic look back into the post war years with Mick Westwood and his amazing way with words. Do you remember?

Remember?

Remember the red phone box, and pressing ‘Button A’,
Remember the tin dustbins, that took the ash away,
Remember the ‘nightsoilers, who emptied out the loo,
Remember then the ‘chimney sweep’, the ‘rag and bone man’ too?

Remember little heaps of coal, tipped up in the street,
Remember scruffy children, with clogs upon their feet,
Remember doing ‘maypole dances;’ on brighter summer days,
Remember playing ‘conkers’ in the autumns fading rays?

Remember drinking ‘castor oil’ to keep your body bright,
Remember doing ‘proper toast’ by the firelight,
Remember swinging ‘firecans’, round about your head,
Remember keeping chickens, in the garden shed?

Remember filling ‘inkwells’ and changing pens and ‘nibs’,
Remember picking bilberries and all having first dibs’,
Remember Saturday ‘matinee’, and the cowboy films we saw,
Remember paddling in the sea, or standing on the shore?

Remember drinking ‘ginger beer’, that ‘fizzed’ into your head,
Remember using big stone jars, to warm your winter bed,
Remember ‘polly donkeys’ for a ride along the sand,
Remember singing carols, for ‘tuppence’ in your hand?

Remember all these simple things, a childhood at its best,
Remember all the friends we had, and how we all felt blessed,
Remember when we never gave anything a price,
Remember,  just remember, when everything was nice!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
