Rescue Cats

Rescue Cats

We sat on a bench and enjoyed a welter
Of cats at the Westbourne Animal Shelter.
Cats aristocratic, cats born in an attic,
Aloof cats and palley cats, home cats and alley cats
Large cats, small cats, two feet tall cats.
Wall-to-wall cats.

White as innocence, black as hell,
Ginger, tabby and tortoiseshell.
Striped and spotted, calico-patched,
Some with a pair of socks well-matched;
Snooze in the sun cats, Sad cats, fun cats,
Weighing half a ton cats.

Cats hushed, cats miauly, Cats squeaky, cats growly,
Cats pretty, cats ugly, cats scratchy, cats snuggly.
Waiting in the Shelter for the wind to blow fair
All of them worthy of somebody’s care.
We came looking for a new ship’s cat,
A Tortie chose us, and that was that.
