Soul Queen

Soul Queen

And you could play piano too
So little of your work I knew
But my idols idolised you
You were one of the chosen few.

Fame was not your friend, it’s true;
Like Elvis, something in you withdrew
To binge eating, the booze, your zoo
Of hangers on. Despite a slew

Of hits, the real rewards were few.
Slumped in bed, the TV view
Became your lifestyle choice in lieu
Of living. Did you ever rue

The day you left your father’s pew?
Your gospel blood pulsed strong, true blue
Worldwide a devoted following grew.
But as to salvation – join the queue!

So now – gold casket on open view
Respect to whom respect is due
(And you could play piano too)
I say a little prayer for you.

Silver divorcee with two adult children. I like nature and the arts. Too serious for my own good, tho not without a sense of humour ;-)
