Sweetheart, Let Me Go My

I wrote many years ago while working in Saudi Arabia for my wife.  At the time I was in hospital with a serious malady and in unbelievable pain, the doctor’s couldn’t identify the problem and I thought I was going to die.

I recited this poem to an English nurse and she wrote it down for me to give to my wife should I pass away. I was airlifted to the UK where my problem was identified and I went through a difficult operation that I was told, saved my life.

I found this poem in my loft yesterday along with other stories and poems I had written many years ago.

Sweetheart, Let Me Go My

If it should be I grow frail and weak,

And pain prevents my peaceful sleep,

Then you must do what must be done,

When this last battle can’t be won.

You will be sad, I understand.

Selfishness might stay your hand.

But on this day, more than the rest,

Your love and friendship take the test.

We’ve had so many happy years,

That what’s to come can hold no fears.

You’d not want me to suffer.

So when the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they’ll tend.

Only please stay with me until the end.

Hold me firm and speak to me.

Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you, too, will see,

It is a kindness that you do for me.

Do not grieve it should be you.

Who must decide this thing to do?

We’ve been so close, we two, these many years……

Don’t let your heart hold any fears.

On day we will meet again

And stand together at God’s right hand

And walk the pathway hand in hand.
