The Cat

The Cat

A shadow comes before me,
Slowly moving, creeping.
I step back, ever back against
It’s relentless movement.
I feel a wall behind me.
I can go back no further
It stops at my feet, teasing me
I feel eyes looking at me
I see a leg, then another
Then out of the darkness comes the cat.
It looks at me, working me out.
Friend or foe.
I no longer resist and stretch out a hand
It ponders for a moment then gently
Brushes its face against it, purring
It has won and I am glad to lose
To the cat, forever.
