The Country Lane

Memories are so precious..no one can take them away from you..they are like folded clothes in their very own special place in your heart. It’s lovely to get them out, hold them up to the light and remember all the past people, places and events that turned you into you..each memory leading to other memories that have perhaps faded slightly as the years rolled by.

The Country Lane

Looking at the calendar..I see that Special day draws near,
A time for thinking loving thoughts..of those who are not here.
Not many days go drifting by..without me remembering mum,
But this special day, when it arrives, are when most memories come.

My life goes on around me and the past seems far away,
I yearn for happy memories from when I was just..a child at play.
And so I thought I’d take a trip, along a country lane,
And visit the home of my childhood, travel back in time again.

The home that I grew up in..still exists today,
A cottage in the countryside, where I used to grow and play.
So I parked up in the village..beside my old primary school,
Remembering happy play times..when I used to act the fool.

A short walk down the narrow lane..around a bend or two,
Memories came flooding back, as our old garden gate came into view.
The cottage hadn’t changed a lot, the front garden looked the same,
Except the apple tree I used to climb..had gone..which was a shame.

And so l paused just by the gate..travelled back to childhood days,
Remembering all the happy times..and all my mothers lovely ways.
Always there to greet me, when I came home from school,
Always there to hug me, when life was mean or cruel.

One thing I could depend on..was her boundless love for me,
And her gentle hands..so comforting..bathing grazes on my knee.
Many forgotten memories, came flooding through my brain,
I’m really glad I made the trip..to our old home again.

A new mother now resides there..I can see a pram..and swing,
Now other children laugh and play..in the home where I took wing.
I could really feel mums presence, as I turned and walked away,
Grateful for the memories…I found there..on Mother’s Day.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
