The Dame

The Dame

Beautiful lady, of a great graceful age,
Whose glory was built on the screen and the stage,
Whose iconic visions, and nightingale song,
Spoke out for a nation, devoid of a tongue.

With troops scattered far, and morale often low,
From attack and attack, and blow after blow,
Just a crackle of sound, in a clearing so small,
And the ‘Bluebirds of Dover’, were coming to call.

As thousands of men all rallied to fight,
To give of their all, with all of their might,
No thought did they give, for what they might face,
For ‘We’ll meet again’ kept them all in good grace.

Oh, magical lady, who lifted moral,
With sweet melody and your tuneful choral,
Who lifted our heart and memory long,
We thank you,  God bless you, for your sweet dreamful song.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
