The Killing Fields

In 9 days time this country will be commemorating the end of World War One and Two, also all other conflicts since 1945 to the present day, we will be remembering those brave men, women, and other civilians who fell and all those husbands, sons, and brothers who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice.

For the next 9 days, I will post one of my own poems from my book World War One in Verse, If you want a copy of my book please inbox me, these are some of my poems and they are my personal way of remembering them.

We should also remember the millions of animals that died during WW1, this is my tribute to them.

The Killing Fields

The ghosts of men in killing fields,
Bright red poppies are all it yields,
Born from the blood of those who fell,
From sniper’s gun and cannon shell.

The war horse standing tall and proud,
Now dead in battlefields he ploughed,
Buried alive upon the Somme
and never knowing who had won.

The German Shepherd sitting there,
Is that uncanny…? I don’t care!
Those dogs saved many English lives,
and sent men home to mums and wives.

The cross of white just says it all,
Reminding man of his shortfall,
For when they fight and bullets fly,
Then man will surely have to die.

Man, dog or horse, whichever it be,
Gave of their lives so we walk free,
This solemn picture now long gone,
Reminds us we should live… as one!

For all the tears that mothers cried,
For all those brave men who have died,
For that old soldier stood outside-
Who sold you a poppy, wear it with pride!
