The Robin

The Robin

Each day I take a little walk,  down our quiet country lane,
With measured tread I walk a mile, down, then back again.
I feel the breeze upon my brow, I breath the country air,
I see the clumps of snowdrops, emerging from their lair.

I watch a pigeon flying, a twig held in its beak,
Gliding to a Holly bush, to give its nest at tweak.
All is very peaceful, as spring wakes up at last,
Ice and snow and rainy days, are now part of the past.

I stop and rest, lean on a gate, I think of the last year,
Of family that I haven’t seen, because of COVID fear.
I think of things I used to do, when I had a normal life,
Playing snooker, dancing, going shopping with my wife.

I look across the green field, that leads down to some trees,
Past grazing sheep oblivious, to a nation on its knees.
If we can send a rocket, and place a camera on Mars,
If we can replace exhaust fumes, with electric cars.

Then surely, with all due respect, if it’s not too much to ask,
Let’s concentrate on living, without having to wear a mask.
We all know the problems, that beset the human race,
But how can we resolve them, unless we meet them face to face.

Forests disappearing, ice caps melting day by day,
Ways of life evaporating, while we decide which card to play.
My thoughts were interrupted, by a Robin landing on the gate,
It cocked its head and looked at me, dispelling thoughts of fate.

I’m not sure how long we rested there, the Robin and the man,
But our thoughts were interrupted, by a passing delivery van,
So the Robin flew back to the wood, and I continued walking,
Thinking of the little bird, and our meeting, without talking.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
