The Stepping Stones of Home

The Stepping Stones of Home

A little boy was playing with his sister long ago
They had no phones or iPads, only a radio
For they lived out in the country, far away from city sounds
But they grew up with a love of nature’s bounty all around.
Climbing trees and swimming, happy ’til the gloam
When they would cross the Stepping Stones, across the stream to Home
The years passed on as years will do, and so the children grew,
Until the boy felt discontent, and wanted more than what he knew
Determined to leave all his kin, and the gentle life they led
He packed his bags, said his goodbyes, and to the city fled
His distraught sister watched him as he left there alone
Boldly ‘cross the Stepping Stones, across the stream from Home
Bedazzled by the city lights, he turned so soon to crime
Found he could make more money than working all the time
Thirsty for thrills and easy led, he robbed the Royal Mail
He killed a man and now resides, for all his life in jail.
I was that boy, I was a fool, I never now can roam
Back to walk the Stepping Stones, across the stream to home.

Originally from Guernsey, but now living in Sussex, UK, I started writing poems and song lyrics when I was 16 or 17. I celebrated my 70th birthday last year, and am hoping that I've improved a little during the years between. Been published and also broadcast on local radio. Would love to be rich just so that I could visit Canada more often.
