This Funny Old World

This Funny Old World

“It’s a funny old world,” said the man to his wife,
“Where we toil and we work for most of our lifes,
And we pay into this and we pay into that,
Only to find we must beg for some back.”

“It’s a funny old world,” said the wife to her man,
“Where we count every penny and do what we can
To make both ends meet, but the worries persist
As the bills keep arriving and savings grow less.”

“It’s a funny old world,” said the man to his son,
“Where progress is made but we’re no further on.
The pauper still begs and the homeless still squat,
And the wars keep on raging; unable to stop.”

“It’s a funny old world,” said the son to the corpse,
As he stood in the chapel and cried for his Da,
“Where we struggle through daily and fight to survive,
Yet once we give in – we find
Peace of mind!”

As a survivor of domestic abuse I found writing down my inner thoughts in the form of poetry to be an exellent therapy which aided my recovery greatly. I am fully aware abusive behaviour in a relationship can come from both sides, therefore I apologise that my poems on the subject are aimed solely at the male species. This is mainly due to the fact that they are based on my own personal experiences, and not on life in general. I am pleased to say that once I had purged my system of the bitterness I held towards my perpetrators I could go on to write poetry on various other subjects; which I hope some of you will enjoy reading!
