Thoughts in my Head

Thoughts in my Head

Most buildings erected are taller today
Though, our tempers are shorter – in disarray,
We construct wider highways to take our new cars
Yet our viewpoints are smaller, narrower by far,
We spend all our money although we have less
Do our shopping online without any regress,
We have bigger houses for parties to host
Yet our families are smaller, two children at most.

We have more degrees but lack common sense
More experts, more problems, our world is so tense,
We consume too much drink, yet we’re still alive
Medicines are advanced but we struggle to survive,
Most people lack compassion their lives uninspired
We stay up too late, wake up far too tired,
Our possessions are many, but values reduced
By money and trappings we’ve all been seduced.

We’ve travelled to the moon and to the world’s end
Yet we can’t cross the street to greet an old friend,
Though our planet is cleaner our souls are polluted
Most lives are in turmoil – so convoluted!
The Atom was conquered yet prejudice lives on
Against all coloured skin, gay daughter or son,
As plans all grow bigger and accomplishments less
We should learn to slow down, release all our stress.

Big men rule our world with characters so small
No interest in mankind – just profits – that’s all,
We build big computers but don’t communicate
Facebook and Twitter, rife with prejudice and hate.
The throwaway society polluting our air
The shop window is full yet the warehouse is bare!
Our medicines control us, teach us to chill
Everything today is controlled by a pill.

We should all take a step back, look at our lives
Not greet life head-on – before it arrives,
Be kind to our children who look on us with pride
Because soon they’ll no longer be at your side,
But wherever they go, you’ll be there in their hearts
Those memories created, will help time apart,
For lives are not measured by breaths that we take
But by life-changing decisions that we’ll make,

Take time for your loved ones, make time to speak
Show them you love them every hour day and week,
Hold the hands that you cherish, show them you care
Because someday that hand – will no longer be there.

My poem but attributed in part to the words of George Carlin.
