Silversurfers Forum: “How To” Guide

This is a quick guide on how to use the Silversurfers forums for you to raise any issues of interest that you would like to discuss with fellow friends and members of Silversurfers.

Joining the Community

While you can read any of the content on Silversurfers Forum without membership, you will need to become a member of the Silversurfers Community to add topics of discussion and post comments on other topics.

Finding the content that interests you!

There are a wealth of topics in the Silversurfers forum for you to interact with – so we thought it best to make finding the topics that interest you, as simple as possible. Silversurfers forum offers a number of navigation elements to assist you on your journey:

forum_navigation_advice

The navigation panel, illustrated above, can be found near the top of all Silversurfers forum pages.

A The search box

The search box is always a good place to start looking for content – especially if you have a particular interest you are looking for. You can enter a single word or short sentence – hit enter, or click the magnifying glass – and we’ll return forum categories and topics that best match your search term – ordered by relevance.

B The Category Menu

A click in this box will drop down our forum category tree. Simply click the category that interests you, and we’ll show you all the topics (or sub categories) that belong to it. This is a great way to find a general category that you are interested in, and see all the topics which have been attributed to it. If you want to start conversing with the community, but don’t have a specific topic you want to discuss – using the category menu is a great place to start.

C The Breadcrumb Trail

The Breadcrumb Trail, so called because it shows a route back to the start (a la Hansel & Gretel), is a good way to find content related to the content you are already looking at. Let’s say you are looking at a topic that one of our community members has added, and you want to contribute to a similar topic – have a look at the breadcrumb, and simply click the category that the topic belongs to – and you’re away!

D Add a Topic

So you’ve searched the forum, delved into relevant categories, but have not found the topic you were looking for? Don’t despair! Take ownership of your thoughts and add your own topic using this handy little button! Give it a click and you’ll be presented with a simple form which you can add a topic title, topic description, and choose the category that you think this topic should be added to. Once you save this, one of our moderators will make sure all’s to order, and make it visible to the community. You must be logged in to see this feature.

Interacting with the Community

That’s what forums are for, after all. To interact with the community you need to be a logged in and registered Silversurfers member. It’s totally free, and very easy to get started. Details of this are at the top of this page.

Make your voice heard with comments!

You can add a comment to any topic in the forum. This can be as a reply to another users comment, or a totally new comment. To add a new comment, simply add your comment to the box at the top: “Please write your comments here…”, and the click the “Add your Comment” button.

To reply, simply click on the “Reply” button shown beneath all existing comments. When you reply to someone’s comment, your reply will be listed at the top of the comments, with a quote of the comment (and member) you replied to listed in a grey box above your comment.

Comments are always from newest to oldest, keeping the conversation fresh and up to date, without having to scroll through pages of comments to see the latest. However, we know when it comes to replies, it’s nice to be able to read the conversation from start to finish. If a comment is a reply to a reply (or beyond) we add a link to the grey quote box: “Show full conversation” which allows you to see the full conversation, from start to finish, without leaving the thread.

Thumb up, Thumbs down

If you are logged in, you can show that you agree or disagree with a comment by clicking either the green thumbs up button, or red thumbs down button.

Keep it clean, keep it friendly.

We want you to feel comfortable in the Silversurfers community forum, so please show respect for the other community members. That’s not to say we expect all members to agree on all topics, we are huge advocates of freedom of speech and opinion, but not to bullying or abuse. We have moderators constantly monitoring comments to ensure the forum remains a welcoming place – but naturally, sometimes a rogue comment will slip the net. It is for this reason that we provide you with the opportunity to “Flag as Inappropriate” any comment that you deem aggressive, abusive, or overtly offensive. When you click this link, it will highlight the comment to our moderation team, who will vet it for you.

Your finger on the pulse. Keeping up to date with notifications

We know it can be hard to keep track of all the topics you are involved with, which is why the Silversurfers forum comes with it’s own notifications system. When you are logged in, you will see a brick red notifications bar stuck to the bottom of you screen. Give this a click to see, near realtime, useful notifications – to get you right back into the chat.

notifications

We will notifiy you whenever a community member leaves a reply to one of your comments, when leaves a comment on a topic you have become involved with, or when they comment on a topic you started. We will also notify you when a new topic becomes available – so be sure to keep an eye on that clever red bar!

The notifications bar is pretty straight forward to use. Click the bar to show the notifications. The number displayed is the amount of notifications you have, but have not clicked “View” for. Clicking view takes you through to the comment, or topic it is related to. If you want to remove any notifications, you can do this by clicking the “dismiss” button.

That’s all, folks!

We really hope you enjoy using the Silversurfers forum, and manage to make some lasting friendships with like minded people.

If you any queries, or have any suggestions on how you feel we can improve it for you, please do not hesitate to send an email to Sally at [email protected]

Hello ErnieTheUnwise and welcome to Silversurfers. A great way to get involved on our site is to take a look at Current Topics in our Forum and feel free to engage in anything that takes your interest.

We also have a very active Speakers Corner section where you may find something that interests you. https://www.silversurfers.com/speakers-corner/ and if you would like to join the discussion on the challenges of self-isolation then hereโ€™s where to go: https://www.silversurfers.com/silversurfers-forum/topic/daily-diaries-of-those-who-are-self-isolating-due-to-coronavirus/

I hope you enjoy being part of our community.

First time on the forum. Self isolation is no problem for me as I have always found alone time rewarding. I can always find something to occupy myself or of interest and I live in a community setting, so not isolated. Thought I might see if anyone is feeling lost having their routine disrupted. The social butterflies must be finding the lifestyle something of an adjustment. Take care and try not to worry about loved ones. That is easier said than done...

Hi, this is my first time on this forum. I live in Charleston, SC surrounded by rivers and marshes and the beach. Geographically, it's one of the most beautiful places on earth, Today, even though we don't want to, we're listening to news about two mass shootings that happened over the weekend. There have been 251 this year. The political climate in our country is the most hateful and divisive it has been since the 1960s, maybe even worse. One of the things I do to escape in my mind is watch British TV shows on Netflix. I've watched Broadchurch, Father Brown, Luther, Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax, Midsomer Murders, River, and several others. Does anyone have recommendations for me?

Hi fellow Silver Surfers,

I just joined today so I'm new to this! I am retired, a widow and have two daughters married with their own families. I live on a little Scottish island but also spend part of my time in Germany where my daughter and family reside. I got an MA in History from the Open University as a mature student but I am a life-long learner. I am currently doing a Linguistics Course with Future Learn. I like to travel to interesting places, walking, swimming and I'm an avid reader.

HI i've joined cos I live with two young men , gosh that sounds very risque but ones my son and the other is fostered. But they don't want to spend time with 'mum'! So while they're upstairs playing on computers or playstations or whatever, I'm downstairs ALWAYS on my own. Bored and fed up. Need someone to chat to!

I registered with Silversurfers over a year ago, I can't remember why as I was in happy relationship so didn't feel the need to 'chat' or find friends. I think I was seduced by the opportunity to share pictures of art work, or the chance of 'offers'.
Anyway, I hadn't used the site for anything, but knew it was there because of the occasional Surfers email that drifted into the mail box to remind me.
Now, however, I find my self recently and suddenly bereaved...... dazed, lonely despite having friends nearby........... just lost.
I still retain a sense of humour, and the view that life is to be enjoyed. It will get better. Maybe this will lead to something .

The world was different when I chose my online nom da plume!

Hi, Iโ€™m a newbie here, and not sure this is the forum for me. I donโ€™t see my issue(s) on the topics.
It looks like this is kinda mostly G.B. rather than U.S. It looks like a lot of 2-3 months old or so messages. I canโ€™t wait that long for answers to my issue(s) โ€“ I wonโ€™t specify details til I hear if maybe Iโ€™ve misunderstood.
Thanx,

Its been a beautiful sunrise and the weather looks set fair for the next week or more. Remember to water your plants people.
I've done my orchids indoors this morning . I'm trying to grow some cut and come again lettuce have had to start over a bit cause the reached squirrels dug up the soil in the pot just as they were getting started. But I got some fine mesh and have wrapped it around the pot so hopefully that will keep the little blighters off.
Recently I made the effort to plant 3 packs of bedding I got from the market into a little patch of ground near my garage. I live in a flat so don't have a garden but the estate management gardeners don't seem to mind my efforts.. The bulbs I planted last year came up prettily and I hope everyone locally enjoyed them. I took several lots indoors for my pleasure.
I cut two rose stems the other day and they are on my windowsill as I'm typing this. Along with an orchid stem I cut off. I got some vanilla pods in a glass tube I kept and put the orchid stem in that within a vase I filled with water retaining crystals and some green dye powder. The orchids on the stem are white with burgundy splodges and look pretty. Its not unusual to have a stem of flowers last a month or more so you can't say you don't get your money's worth.. Orchids don't require the attention a lot of people think they do., watering ever 7-10 days is fine and a little feed. a pot of that will last you 'forever'.
Have a lovely weekend everyone and enjoy the summer sun,. But wear high factor sun screen and a hat if you need one and be aware of the necessity to drink some water. Get out there and get some Vitamin D whilst you can for free.

Hi,
New to this so please be patient, would like to chat with anyone from the Manchester area but if not anyone.
I would like anyone's opinion on something that happened to me at the weekend.
I was shopping in Ashton u Lyne and saw a rough sleeper who looked freezing so I gave him a pound, next thing a women grabbed me by the shoulder shouting,
You shouldn't do that he could use that money for drugs. To which I replied do you know him if not how do you know if he's going to use it for food ? Anyway she started effing and jeffing so I walked off. My question is was I right to give the young lad the money and was it anything to do with her anyway ?

I think you have to go with what feels right to you. Yes he may use drugs but he may not and could have bought something to eat.I give a donation to the Salvation Army
twice a year as they run food kitchens for rough sleepers.

Hi Kevin I am also new to this chat and yours is one of the first chats I have read.
I think it is your choice to do as you please and it is nobody elseโ€™s business.
The world is full of people interfering in other peopleโ€™s lives but if you follow your heart and do what feels right for you, you cannot be wrong.
How could caring about a fellow human being ever be wrong?
I do hope it didnโ€™t upset you.
All the best

Hello I am new to this. I am 69 living in a Oxfordshire in a marriage which is passed it's sell by date. I have two lovely daughters but unfortunately one has decided to banish the other from her life. I have recently retired from 25 years of company ownership and a feeling lonely to say the least. On the positive side I have good health, and I recognise there are many far worse off than me. Looking for friendly contact.

Hi Roberto, I am also new here. It is a shame your daughter has turned against the other, how do things get to such a stage in the short time we are on this earth.
Have you retired totally, if it was your own company are you not able to be involved a little. I find it hard not to have something positive and constructive to do.

Hi Roberto. I am very new to this site. I have been divorced for many years and, although I have a very close family and some good friends, it is often lonely being single. Are you sure that your marriage cannot be refreshed? I wish that I had someone to grow old with, someone I have known for many years. We don't know how others feel, of course, but I would say: 'Give your marriage a chance. It may just be that you are having a difficult time adjusting to retirement. Why not plan some travel time with your partner? Get to know each other again.'

Hi, I have been a member for several months but only started chatting yesterday. I live in Hampshire, near the coast, with three toy poodles, they are good company but quite bossy. My husband passed away on Easter Monday, he had survived by pass surgery twice, 1984, 1994, but been very ill for several months. I have three sons, they all live abroad. I alternate between sloth & activity, holiday quite happilty on my own, my husband liked different holidays. I cruise & go on coach tours. We lived in Southern Africa for 30+ years, had some adventures, saw many things. Politically I'm a bit radical, although Mrs May seems to have grasped the bull by the horns, early days, talk is cheap, I'll keep an open mind. I enjoy chatting & hope to hear from people. I'm not looking for romance, two husbands are enough for me, so friendship, women or men.

I like the idea of love continuing. My husband died on Easter Monday, he had been very ill for a long time. I am ambiguent about love, I think it's a hormone rush, replaced by deep friendship & caring. I sent his ashes back to South Africa where he was happiest, they had many adventures, the ship was confiscated as there was a contamination on board, he was forgotten, eventually made it to Cape Town, left in a warehouse. Then he was picked up, forgotten again & rolled about in the boot of a car for a week. A friend's daughter found them & he finally made it to the MoTHs in Fish Hoek. There was a service for him given by the padre, & his ashes finally interred in the Garden of Remembrance. Yesterday I received a DVD taken by his friend of the service & the wake, and now I've found closure. Brian was adjutant at the Battledress Shellhole. The Member of the Tin Hats are an ex army organisation for people who have served on the front line during a war. The are a charity & help fellow ex servicemen &'women, important in South Africa where there are no benefits nor government help. Of course we had lots of fun & made great friendships. Sadly Brian's health deteriorated after his second by pass, I wanted to come home , he came willingly but was never happy or settled. He is back now, under the sunny sky near the beach, I hope he has found peace at last. Like you, I have no religion nor belief in much really. I love animals, I have three rescue dogs, they are toy poodles, cute, naughtie & the very devil to house train, they are retired mummy dogs so came to me from kennel situations.

Terry, I don't know Jane, but my best friend was gay, he was a wonderful man. We had fun and could discuss most things. He passed away in 2003, I still miss him. My uncle was also gay, he
died a couple of months before Jeffrey, he was also good company
& interested in many things. Yes, I would also like a gay man as a friend again.

Hi everyone, I'm not exactly new, but I haven't been on here for ages so I thought that a new introduction might be in order. Like Veronique I love dogs we lost our last two very quickly one after the other and decided that at our age we didn't think it fair to have another dog, but after living in a horrible clean and empty house we adopted a seven year old Lab., now my house has a nice layer of blonde fur everywhere! I also like knitting and reading, I sometimes dabble in cross stitch but it doesn't grow quickly enough for me. My main interest is family history and I spend far too long on the computer tracking down far flung relatives. That's it folks, now to dive into the forums.

Mellie.

Hello Mellie, sounds as if you are on my wavelength. We have also had dogs too, but like you are now too old to exercise them. We had border collies and Alsatians and both were very energetic breeds. I also do knitting and have a cardigan on the go at the moment, used to do cross stitch but as you said, it is too slow and my eyesight is not as good as it was!! I like doing photography and like snapping away. I live in the Midlands, Solihull, and I cannot wait now to get into the garden when the weather gets better. Hope to hear from you. Best wishes, Hidge

Hello I have only just joined Silversurfers so I am a bit lost at the moment as to how to negotiate the site. I will be referring to the advice on how to 'get around' on the site so I'm sure I will get there in the end. I am looking forward to joining in with forum chat particular the one for dog owners - I have three rescued greyhounds and as I read a lot I will be interested in the reading forum. Hoping to have some interesting conversations and make some new friends.

Has anyone had cause for complaint, or at least reporting matter, about treatment by a doctor. Did they follow their instincts and stand p for themselves, or did they chicken out and let it got, while seething inside. ?
