Advice about going on cruises

I would like to go on a cruise. Unfortunately most people I talk to say it's for old people that suits me fine because I'm an older person lol.

Seriously has anybody been on a cruise people and could tell me how they enjoyed it?

The good and the bad. Mayz

Hi Mayzday, my husband and I did 14 day cruise in September. We went on Navigator of the Seas as I wanted a big ship because worried about being sea sick. It was fantastic, didn’t want it to end. It was a bit choppy going over the Bay of Biscay but not a problem. We had brilliant days put in Gibraltar, Nice, Monaco, Rome and Lisbon. We’re supposed to be going to Genoa but there was a storm so Captain decided to try and outrun it and go into Alicante instead. We hit just inside the storm and it was pretty rough, my husband felt a bit sea sick but I was fine. We made a decision to try and join in with the activities onboard and went to many quizzes, tried shuffleboard, mini golf, went to nearly every show (and there were some very good ones), went to the cinema, etc. Food was amazing, not so keen on the buffet restaurant though. Noticed they had gatherings for people travelling on their own, which I thought was an excellent idea. The age range varied, we had a young couple next door to our cabin. The be fair, majority of people were middle aged and over which was nice. Go for it, you won’t regret it I’m sure.

I have cruised about 40 times. Love it and having a degree in culinary arts I get to eat well also. JoJo

Hello JoJo!

I'm interested in your thoughts about which cruise line (or ship) provides the best dining experience? I've thought the Holland America line does a darn good job, but that assessment is from a limited sample size.

Hi May. After going on 6 cruises in the last 3.5 years I can say that cruising is for all ages and they can be fun. Depending on the cruise line, ship, and itinerary, you can tailor a cruise to your liking. For me, I like being on the open ocean and stopping at various ports. I suggest starting off with a 3 day cruise to get a feel for it and select a cruise line-ship that has the activities that you would enjoy.

I'm a little surprised the OP hasn't acknowledged any of the replies below which all make good points.

However, I will add one more link having recently sailed on a purpose built 'Old peoples' cruise for 16 nights. Here is my review on the excellent Saga ship, Spirit of Discovery...

Good afternoon Mayzday.

Hope I'm not too late with my piece of advice but I tend to record all my cruises on a cruise blob and they often prove invaluable to others in their research.

Here's a link to hopefully whet your appetite...

Been on around 40 ships. Yes, some cater for older people - for example Fred Olsen where the average age of passengers is around 70. For a younger atmosphere then try Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines. I reckon one of the best is Saga. They may seem a litle more expensive at first but you need to take into account the fare includes drinks, gratuities (around £8 a day one some ships plus 18% service charge on drinks), transport to and from your home and insurance (or a discount if you already have a policy). It may be for the over-fifties but Saga attracts an active, lively and young-at-heart market. If you are travelling alone they also have quite a number of single cabins so you won't end up paying for a cabin for two.

Hi mayzday - my late husband and I enjoyed several, mostly Med, cruises. The 'good' - sightseeing, entertainment, company, weather, etc etc in my opinion far outweighs the 'bad' - queues, rough seas, delays and so on. I am now on my own and would still consider cruising as an ideal holiday.

I've been on a few cruise with UK based Thompson now this and cruises renamed Miranda. I think they are wonderful. So adaptable. Unpack once and see a different place every day.. in port go on a trip wander round the immediate area or stay on board. There is so much food and beautiful too.
breakfast morning coffee three course lunch we never had. Afternoon tea lovely. Five course dinner then entertainment afterwards which was usually quite good. Fair enough I have never been on my own , I went with my husband who has now passed away. So the last cruise was with my granddaughter and she quite enjoyed it too. Everything on your doorstep and the flexibility to do exactly what you want
